(Mario comforts a random New Donker)
...
It was a day like any other. Cold and bleak. I had just come from work and was walking back home. My house was far away from where I worked, practically the other side of the city, but my car had broke down the day before and I didn't bring enough money for a taxi. Poor Raspberry, she was probably starving because of how long I was taking. I had walked halfway and my legs already felt heavy, as if they were chained to huge weights. I decided to sit down on a nearby bench and give my body a break.
As I sat there I started to think about my life. Work. Eat. Sleep. That was all that my life has consisted of so far. I never expected to be in this situation before. When I was younger I had dreams, dreams to make it to Hollywood and become a big time actor.I was going to star in big movies and and travel all over the world. I dreamed of having a good house and partying with friends. Unfortunately, I grew up and realized that getting into the acting industry wasn't as easy as I had thought. Now I'm a guy who lives in a boring brown apartment and doesn't have any friends. I don't feel like i'm living anymore, i'm just existing.
This world had become more desaturated as time went on. His colorful vibrant rainbow now painted in shades of gray. For a second, I wondered if life was worth living.
And that's when a man sat next to me on the bench I was sitting on. To say that I was bewildered was an understatement, usually people just walk past people, not giving strangers like him the time of day. But this guy actually took the time to sit with him. Weird.
And his appearance was just as weird as his action. Sporting a colorful red turtleneck with bright blue overalls and shiny yellow buttons instead of the grey suits and hats that everyone else had won.
"What? Why are you here?" I asked, genuinely curious about this mans line of thinking.
The man shrugged and looked up at me "I don't know" He said "I was a bit tired and you seemed like a chill person, so I decided that I could sit here" the man smiled me "I can sit her, can't I?"
"Oh yes! Yes! You're not bothering me. Don't worry" I assured the guy.
He nodded and leaned into the back of the bench. He took a deep breath and sighed in delight. "Isn't life just wonderful. I am so happy that I get to experience it"
"Why do you say that?" I didn't mean to sound so pessimistic, especially to a stranger that I didn't know, but it was basically second nature for me to be negative.
"Why do you think life is bad?" Damn. Well I guess I only had myself to blame for that one.
"Well... I-I don't know. I guess I just don't have anything waiting for me back home. No friends. No family. I'm unsuccessful. I could list a billion things just from the top of my head really. the only thing I have back home is my cat, Raspberry"
"Well I think your cat would miss you a lot if you were gone, don't you think?"
At first I wanted to laugh. Raspberry wouldn't miss me, in fact, some of the things he did convinced me that he hated me. However, after looking at the situation more seriously I realized how lonely he might be without me. Who was going to play with him when he was bored? Who was going to teach him new tricks? Who would pet him in his favorite spot?
"I-I guess he would"
The man nodded "Don't worry bud. You have your whole life ahead of you. Just because things don't go so well in the beginning doesn't mean that your life is doomed"
I pondered on the man's words. He was right. I still had time to improve on myself and reach my goals. Wow! Who knew that this surprise therapy session would be so healing. "I really needed to hear that. Thank you Mr...?"
The man chuckled and tipped his hat "Happy to help, and the name's Mario" Mario jumped from the bench "Now I have to get going. The princess isn't going to save herself" Mario rubbed his chin "Or at least, not this time"
"Oh before you go" I pulled a power moon out of my pocket "I give this to you, as a thank you for sitting down next to me"
The man named Mario happily to the moon from my hands. "Thank you. This will be very useful" He put it in his pocket and started running off "Bye-bye"
I didn't bother shouting bye back. Instead I simply waved good bye. After the man was gone I also got up from the bench. Everything felt more brighter now. I couldn't wait to hug cat and tell him how thankful I am to have him, I thought with a huge goofy smile on my face.
