Ava woke up startled by the loud sound of thunder and rain. It was 8:00 am. Rachel didn't stop because of the rain. "Hi Ava!" said Rachel, looking over her shoulder for a second at Ava then back at the road. "Hi." said Ava, looking around to see where they were. "We just entered Turkmenistan." said Rachel, looking at Ava again. "I'm a little lost though and it's hard to see anything in the rain." said Rachel. Ava looked out the windshield, it was hard to see the road even with the windshield wipers working. Ava grabs her bag from the floor and puts it on her lap. She opens it and gets the map. "There's a shortcut through those woods. If we go through there, we will be closer to Afghanistan." said Ava, pointing to the right side of the road. The right side of the road had many trees lined in a row. The trees didn't have any leaves and had burn marks on them. "I'm surprised there are still trees there." said Rachel, looking at the sad landscape. "Global warming, am I right?" Ava says, jokingly. Rachel laughs and turns right, into the trees.
Rachel starts driving through the forest with no idea where they're going. It was still very hard to see anything. "Are you sure this is the right way, Ava?" asked Lucy, looking at the trees. "Yes, it should be," said Ava, looking hard at the map. "What do you mean it should be? This is the right way, right, Ava?" asked Rachel, looking Ava right in her eyes. "Uh, Rachel?" said Izzy, being ignored. "Yes, it is." said Ava, looking into Rachel's eyes. "Tree!" said Lucy, jumping up and pointing at a tree that Rachel was about to hit. Rachel breaks eye contact with Ava and looks at the tree she was about to crash into and swerves around it. Ava grabs her seat, Izzy and Lucy hold on to the door and seat, and Rachel grabs onto the steering wheel tightly. The car was going out of control. It was spinning in circles. Then the car spins into another tree, jerking everyone forward. "Oh, no!" thought Ava. The windshield and the front of the car were broken. "Is everyone alright?" asked Ava. "I think so." said Izzy, in shock. Ava felt a sharp pain on her forehead. She touches it and looks at her hand. There was blood on her hand, she had gotten cut from a shard of glass when the car crashed. It wasn't that bad of a cut, but it hurt. Ava grabs her brown bag and gets the rubbing alcohol and a hand towel. She pours the liquid on the towel and holds it on the cut. It burned, but Ava didn't mind.
They all get out of the car and get soaked by the rain. "What do we do now?" asked Lucy. "We have to walk," said Ava. "All the way to Antarctica? That would take a lot of time!" said Rachel. "No, just to the nearest building or town, stupid." said Ava. Rachel rolls her eyes. "We're walking." said Ava, grabbing her bag out of the car and walking deeper into the woods. Everyone catches up to Ava. "This is going to take a while," said Rachel. "Yep." said Izzy. Ava puts the cloth back in her bag and closes it.
An hour goes by and it is still raining. At times you could hear the sound of wild animals in the distance, there was a lot of growling. "What do you think lives in these woods?" asked Izzy, getting nervous. "Cougars, snakes, grizzly bears, and a lot more," said Ava. If you took a minute to stop and look around, you would see glowing eyes staring at you from the bushes.
They walk further into the woods as the rain still goes on. Then, Ava stops walking. "Everyone stop!" Ava says, quietly, but loud enough so everyone can hear over the loud rain. Everyone freezes. "What?" Rachel asks, quietly. "Shhh..." said Ava, trying to hear. Everyone looks around. Then, a low, loud growling sound comes from a short distance in front of Ava. Ava starts backing up slowly, as the animal's eyes glow, staring right at her. "What animal is it?" whispers Izzy to Rachel. "Cougar." Rachel whispers, back. Before anyone could blink, the large animal pounces onto Ava, knocking her down and clawing her face. "Ah!" Ava shouts. "Ava!" shouted Rachel, running to help her. The beast looks up at Rachel and growls loudly, telling her to back up. Rachel backs a few steps backward, looking at Ava on the ground. The cougar stands right on top of Ava. Ava's bag was still on her arm, she reaches in the bag quickly and pulls out a throwing knife. She stabs the cougar in its shoulder and the animal jumps off of Ava in pain, roaring. Ava slides herself back on the ground, panting, Rachel grabs Ava and pulls her back. Rachel takes Ava far away from the beast and lays her down. Ava holds her hand on her eye in pain, trying to stop the blood. Red was seeping through her fingers and running down her hand. Rachel takes the bag off of Ava and gets one of her towels. She holds the towel against her eye.
The cougar charges at Izzy. Then, a grizzly bear comes out from the trees and tackles the cougar before it could reach her. The cougar and bear fight in a bloody battle to the death. There are bite marks and scratches all over both the animals as they attack each other.
"Are you okay, Ava?" asked Rachel, concerned for her sister.
Ava inhales sharply as her cuts continue to sting like fire. "I-I don't know." said Ava, in pain.
The battle ends between the bear and cougar. The bear had won and the cougar layed there, dead. The bear fell on his side to the ground, he was tired and injured. Ava grabs her medical supplies, gets off of the ground and runs toward the weak grizzly. "What are you doing?" Rachel shouts, standing up. "Hold on." Ava shouted back. Ava kneels down next to the animal. She gets out her medical supplies and lays them out on the ground beside her. She pours some of the rubbing alcohol onto a towel and holds it to the bear's fresh cut through its fur. It was bad, but she knew what to do. She throws the towel to the side and gets her needle and thread. Ava starts sewing the bear's wound, hoping it would make it.
Some time passed and Ava was successful with helping the bear. It laid there for a few minutes before becoming stable enough to stand. The bear was eight feet tall if it stood on two legs, it had beautiful brown hair, and was male. He was ready to be released back to the wild. "You can go now," said Ava to the bear. The bear wouldn't go, he wanted to stay with Ava because she healed him instead of leaving him to die. The bear would have bled to death if Ava had just left him. It was a rough fight, the bear also got scratched in his eye like Ava had. "I'm keeping him." said Ava, looking into Rachel's eyes. "What, no!" shouted Rachel, still shocked.
"Why not? He could be helpful!" said Ava, not wanting to leave the bear behind. Rachel stopped for a second to think. "I guess he could be useful," said Rachel. "Yeah!" said Ava. "Fine, you can keep him, just be prepared to eat him if we run out of food." Rachel says. "What? No!" Lucy shouts. Rachel sighs. "The world's ending, it's life or death Lucy. Would you rather die or eat an animal? Also, don't tell me you're vegan." Rachel says, annoyed. "No, I'm not a vegan, and I would just feel bad eating someone's pet!" Lucy says. "You can't have a kind heart when the world is ending, woman up, Lucy." Rachel says, sternly. "Geez, someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed today." Izzy whispers. "Shut up." Rachel says. Ava laughs.
Ava turns back to face the bear and pauses for a second. Then she gasps, excitedly. "I'll name you Scar!" shouts Ava. "That's a good name," said Lucy. "Ava, come here." said Rachel as she rips her blue jeans. "What are you doing?" asked Ava as she walked to Rachel. Rachel gets a long and round piece of her jean pants. Using Ava's supplies, she pokes two holes in the clothing and puts thread through the holes. She ties the thread and puts it over Ava's head. "It's an eye patch," said Rachel, adjusting the patch. "Oh, thanks." said Ava.
Ava now has a scar of claw marks on her eye going from her hair line, to the bottom of her cheek. Her eye was a blood red color all around, but the eye patch covered the whole scar. Ava walks back to Scar. "I have an idea!" said Ava. "What is it?" asked Rachel. Ava puts her leg to the other side of Scar and mounts him like a horse. Scar doesn't try to knock Ava off, he doesn't care because they have a strong bond already. "That way!" said Ava, loudly, pointing further into the woods. Scar starts walking the way Ava pointed and everybody else follows.
