Ava was the first one to wake up that night, she didn't sleep well because of the pain, but she still got a few hours of sleep. The sun was still setting at the time. Scar was also awake, so Ava got on Scar's back and they went looking for breakfast. They find a food court in the mall and pick their favorites. They had to cook everything, but it was fine. Ava also found some fish in one of the fridges and gave it to Scar. The bear gladly took the fish and devoured it in seconds. "Hungry, huh?" Ava says, smiling. They finish and leave the area, wondering where else they can go. They decide to go to the medical area for supplies, Ava grabs some disinfectant from the back and puts it in her bag. Then, they go to the clothes. Ava finds a plain dark green shirt with baggy peach colored jean pants. She changes into the clothes and takes off the tags.
As the sun sets, Ava and Scar go back to everyone else to wake them up. Ava gets off of Scar and crawls into Rachel's tent. "Rachel, get up." said Ava, trying to wake her sister. She shakes her sister and she doesn't wake up. "Hm..." Ava says, trying to think of an idea of how to wake her sister. Then, she gets it. "Scar!" Ava whispers, calling to the bear. Scar crouches down and sneaks into the tent. Ava signals to the bear with her eyes that he has to get her up. Scar understands and looks at Rachel. The bear takes a deep breath and then roars loud enough to wake everyone up. Rachel jumps awake, startled and looking around quickly. She spots Ava and Scar and then sighs. "Really, Ava?" Rachel asks, annoyed. "It's night, we need to leave." said Ava as she crawled out of the tent going backwards. "What's going on?" asks Lucy, scared. Scar had woken everyone up and the roar had echoed across the mall for everyone to hear. "Just a wake-up call." Ava says, getting on Scars' back. "Good job." Ava says to the bear.
They all start to get packed up to continue the trip. Izzy, Lucy, and Rachel get breakfast from the food court as Ava and Scar look around, finding nothing.
They all meet back at the tents once they are ready to leave.
"Does everyone have everything?" asked Ava, sitting on Scar's back. "Yes." said Lucy, looking around at their supplies. "Okay, let's go." Rachel says as they all walk to the exit. They all leave the dark mall and start walking to the next destination. \Ava takes out her map. "We're almost halfway through Afghanistan."Rachel sighs. "There's still a long journey ahead." said Rachel as Ava put her map away. "Yeah." Ava says.
Lucy looks at Rachel in the glow of the Moon and gets a fluttery feeling. It was like having a school crush again. Lucy loved Rachel's accent and found her voice attractive, she hadn't told anyone about her feelings for her yet.
They walk for three hours with a few stops on the way, Ava was riding Scar the whole time because she couldn't walk. Everybody wishes they had the car still with them. They were only halfway through Afghanistan, and they still had to go through Pakistan. Ava looks back at her map. "There's another short cut coming up soon." said Ava "What's the catch?" asked Rachel. "What do you mean?" asked Ava, confused. "Last shortcut we crashed the car, got attacked by a wild animal, almost burned to death, and you broke your foot!" shouted Rachel. "We would get there faster, and the catch is it's a river," said Ava. "But, there isn't any water left, right?" asked Lucy. "It rained a lot, so I think it's still there," said Ava.
"Would we get there before sunrise?" asked Rachel. "Yes." said Ava.
"It's worth a try." said Izzy "We would need a boat or raft though." said Ava, still looking at the map. "Right." said Rachel, looking at the stores around them.
They walk for twenty minutes and find a camping store. They go inside and look for rafts. They split up in the different aisles of where they think the rafts would be. "I found one!" shouted Lucy, from the third aisle. Everybody follows Lucy's voice to the third aisle and they see the red raft with yellow stripes. It has four seats and plenty of room for everything. "Wait, what about Scar?" asked Izzy. "He's not coming with us." said Ava, sadly. Everyone looks at Ava. "But, you love Scar." said Izzy. "I know, but he will probably get hurt if we bring him, or he could drown!" said Ava. "She's right, it's a good idea to let Scar go." said Rachel, feeling bad for her sister. Scar was the first pet Ava ever had and she had to let him go right as she got him.
They get the raft off of the top shelf and carry it outside. "Where does the shortcut begin?" asked Rachel. "On the right." said Ava. The right side of the road was just like the last shortcut. There were trees that were burned and dry grass. They walked into the dying forest looking for the river Ava had told them about. They walk for ten minutes and find the river. It was a calm river, and no life was in the water. There weren't any trees in it, only around. It was perfect.
