Rachel, Izzy, and Lucy lay the raft into the water. Izzy and Lucy let go, but Rachel holds it so it doesn't float across the river without them. Izzy gets in the raft first, she goes to the front and sits down. Lucy helps Ava off of Scar's back and helps her walk to the raft. "Goodbye, Scar. Thanks for everything." says Ava, feeling sad that she's leaving. Scar whimpers and lays down in the crispy grass and looks at Ava with sorrowful eyes. Lucy and Ava get in together, Ava sits in the second seat and Lucy sits in the third. Rachel puts one of her legs in the raft and climbs in. She sits in the last seat and the raft takes off down the river. "Goodbye." Ava shouts to the bear. Ava finds paddles at the bottom of the raft. They all get one paddle and start rowing so they would get there faster. The river had already started to take them but they just wanted it to go faster so they would have enough time to get to shelter before sunrise. The raft was very wide, each row had two seats and there were only two rows. It was like a square. They didn't have to paddle too much because the current was already taking them pretty fast. Then, there was a small drop up ahead. "Hold on!" said Izzy, grabbing her seat and the side of the raft. Everyone else grabs the side of the raft and holds on. The raft goes front first down and splashes everyone on the drop. "That wasn't that bad." said Lucy, letting go of the raft. Then, there was a tree to the left side of the water. Everyone used their paddles to dodge the tree and go back to the middle.
For ten minutes there were only two big rocks sticking out of the water that they had to dodge, but nothing much happened.
Then, everyone started to hear loud running water and started to get worried. It got louder and louder as they went on. They made a right turn and went down that path for a few minutes. The noises were still getting louder and louder. Then, they saw it. Huge rocks sticking out of the water, big drops, and fast rushing water. "Oh, no!" said Lucy, looking at what was ahead.
"Can everyone swim?" asked Rachel. "Yeah." Izzy said. "Yes." Lucy said. "No!" said Ava, nervously. "You can't swim?" shouted Rachel, not knowing she couldn't swim. "I've never done it before!" Ava shouted back. "Why the hell would you choose a water short cut when you can't swim?" Rachel asks. "I don't know!" Ava shouts, panicking.
The boat goes down a two foot drop and everyone is still on the boat, but wet. The boat turns and hits the side of a rock, everyone gets jerked to the side and falls onto each other. The boat continues down the stream and everyone sees another drop. The boat goes down the three foot drop. Everyone was getting jerked up and down, left and right. "This was a bad idea!" admitted Ava. The boat gets closer to the last drop. The boat, still going at incredible speed, goes down the ten foot drop. Everyone is launched out of the boat and into the water. They all get swept up by the current and try to stay afloat. Rachel cuts her leg on a sharp rock under the water while getting dragged under. The raft gets stuck on the rocks and they lose it. They get their heads above the water gasping for air. Ava sinks back into the water with her arms flailing everywhere trying to swim. "Ava!" Rachel shouts, watching her sister struggle. Rachel tries to swim against the current to Ava, but it's too strong. "Ava!" Rachel shouts again, getting tired from swimming. Ava hasn't come up, she stops struggling and runs out of air. Ava finally floats to where Rachel, Izzy, and Lucy are. Izzy and Lucy swim to the right where there is a rocky and sandy shore. Rachel grabs Ava's limp body and swims to where Izzy and Lucy are. Izzy and Lucy run to Rachel, hoping Ava's still alive.
Rachel gets down on her knees and lays Ava down on the hard ground. Lucy and Izzy sit beside Ava in shock. Rachel grabs Ava's arm and puts her fingers on her wrist. "She still has a pulse." said Rachel, happily, but still scared. "I might have to do CPR," said Rachel. "Have you ever done it before?" asked Izzy, worried for Ava's life. "Yes, a few years ago," said Rachel.
Rachel puts her hands on top Ava's chest and starts forcing up and down. After two minutes of trying Ava still doesn't wake up. "It's not working." said Rachel, about to cry. Then, Ava opens her eyes, sits up, and starts retching out water. Rachel moves out of Ava's way, relieved. Ava gets all the water out of her lungs and lays back down out of breath. Ava catches her breath and sits up. Rachel hugs Ava unexpectedly. "I thought you were dead," said Rachel. "I'm still here, and no more shortcuts." said Ava, wrapping her arms around Rachel. The hug stops and Ava looks at Lucy and Izzy. "I'm so glad you're alive, Ava!" said Lucy. "I'm glad I'm not dead." said Ava, laughing nervously.
She feels something wet on the ground on her right where Rachel is. She looks at her hand and it's covered in blood. She looks at the ground and sees the red painted sand. Ava finds where the blood is coming from, it was Rachel. Rachel had a huge cut on her leg that was half a foot long, it was on the side of her leg and bleeding badly. "Rachel, your leg!" said Ava, in shock. Rachel looks at her leg and finds the cut. "Oh, I got cut when we got thrown out of the raft. I must have forgotten about it." said Rachel. "Okay, let me help." said Ava, taking her bag off of her arm. She was lucky that she didn't lose it in the water. She takes out a small towel, rubbing alcohol, a sewing needle, and thread. Ava rolls Rachel's pants up to the top of the cut on her lower leg area. She pours some of the rubbing alcohol onto the towel that had some blood stains on it already, and gives it to Rachel. Rachel holds the towel to her leg and tries not to think of the burning pain. Ava ties the thread to the needle and looks at Rachel with shaky hands. "Are you ready for this?" asked Ava. "Yes." said Rachel, knowing it will hurt. "Are you going to be okay this time, Lucy?" asked Ava, turning to look at her. "I'll just look the other way." Lucy says, pointing her thumb behind her. Ava turns back to Rachel and takes the towel from her. She lays the towel on the ground and takes a deep breath as Lucy turns the other way. Ava sticks the needle through Rachel's skin. Rachel closes her eyes tightly and squeezes sand in her hands.
Ava does it again and again until Rachel's leg is sewed back together. "I'm done now." said Ava, using a soft voice for comfort. Rachel sighs with relief, but you could hear some trembling in her breath. Rachel lets go of the sand and dusts her hands off. "Are you okay?" asked Ava. "Yeah, it just hurt." said Rachel, getting off of the ground. Ava puts everything back in her bag and stands up on her one leg. They all start walking again with Rachel helping Ava.
They walk for two hours into the woods and find the street again. They were very close to Pakistan. It was 4:45 am, the sun would rise at 6:45 am, so they still had enough time. Ava hears a noise coming from behind a small shop to the left. She stops walking and stares at the building. "What is it?" asked Rachel, using a loud, whispering tone. "I hear something." said Ava, whispering back.
Then, a large animal starts charging toward them, they couldn't exactly tell what it was yet because it was too dark. Everyone runs to the other side of the road except Ava because she knew what it was. The animal stops in front of Ava and looks up at her like it wanted to say, "Hello!" The animal was Scar! He had followed them the whole time they were apart. "Nice to see you again, Scar." said Ava, smiling. Ava turns around and looks at everybody else. "It's okay, it's just, Scar!" shouted Ava. "Oh, cool!" said Izzy as they all walked back. Ava hugs Scar and strokes his soft fur. She gets on his back and they continue walking.
They walked until sunrise and stopped at a mattress store named "Глубокий сон" which means "The deep sleeper." in English. Ava and Rachel can speak and read Russian. They learned English in school, so they could talk to Izzy and Lucy. Rachel could read English, but Ava didn't have enough time in school to learn it completely. The world had started to end before she could read English.
