They enter the store and look around to see a dark room full of beds. "This will be nice." said Lucy, looking around at the dark store. The lights were off, there were not many windows, but they were tinted and had curtains. "We should sleep, there is still a long trip ahead." said Ava, tiredly. "Agreed." says Izzy, yawning.
Everyone splits up looking for a bed. They all find a comfortable place and fall asleep on the soft displays. There weren't any blankets there though, it wasn't much of a problem, it was hot enough in the store.
An hour passes and Ava wakes up. She sits up and looks around the store. Then, the smell of smoke fills the air. "What is that? Smoke?" Ava thinks to herself. She gets out of bed and looks around at her surroundings for fire. Scar wakes up after seeing she was awake. Ava gets on Scar's back and they go to the back of the store to see fire coming from the ceiling. The flames were small but growing quickly. "Scar, go!" Ava shouts. Scar runs back to the front of the store now looking for Rachel, Izzy, and Lucy. They search panickedly around the store and find Izzy in the corner of the store. "Izzy, wake up!" Ava shouts at her. Izzy wakes up startled. "W-What?" Izzy asks, looking around, she looked like she got no sleep. "The store's on fire, we need to leave!" shouted Ava. "Where's Lucy and Rachel?" asked Izzy, springing out of bed. "I don't know, but we need to find them." said Ava as Scar takes her away from Izzy around the store. Ava and Izzy both run around the store looking for the other two. Ava finds Lucy and wakes her up. "The building's on fire, let's go!" said Ava. "Wh-what?" asked Lucy, still half asleep. "We need to leave, come on!" said Ava.
Lucy and Ava run outside and meet Izzy and Rachel standing in the shade of the building. "Is everyone okay?" asked Ava, with ash on her face.
"I think so." said Izzy, looking at everyone. Everyone instantly starts sweating. "Where do we go now?" asked Lucy. "I don't know," said Rachel, looking around.
Everyone looks around and sees that some other stores were on fire.
"We're running out of time." said Ava, looking at the blinding sun.
They all continue walking in the shade at all times. Sometimes they would have to run in the sun to the next shaded area, but they were fine.
They walked for an hour until they came across a train station. "Does anyone know how to drive a train?" asked Izzy. "Why do you ask?" asked Rachel. "We could take a train to the next destination." said Izzy, pointing to the train.
They stop walking to look at each other. "We would get there faster," said Ava, looking into Rachel's eyes. "Okay, we'll take a train." said Rachel, starting to walk into the station. "When did you learn how to conduct a train, Rachel?" asked Lucy, curious. "Long story." said Rachel, thinking of her uncle who worked as a conductor. "Our uncle worked at a train station," said Ava, finally. Rachel had spent a few weeks with her uncle one summer when she was younger. He had taught her everything she needed to conduct one. After that, Rachel had gotten interested in trains and studied them. After a year, she lost interest and wanted to become a doctor or nurse. They pass through the small station and get on the train. Rachel goes to the front where the controls are and looks around trying to remember all of the information in her head about trains that she knew.
Everyone else sits down on the hard wooden floor and makes sure the doors are closed. There were stacks of boxes all around the train full of weapons and technology. It was very dark inside the train, it was good because there was no sunlight.
Two minutes go by and the train starts moving. Rachel had figured out the controls and was able to remember how to do it. They all talk for thirty minutes about Ava and Rachel's uncle, then they get tired from the day and stop talking. They lay on the hard floor thinking of what their new life would be like in Antarctica. Everyone except Rachel had fallen asleep.
"Everyone get closer!" said Ava's dad, motioning his hand for them to scooch in. Everyone starts huddling together in front of the camera and her father. It was uncomfortably close, but Ava got a warm feeling being so close to her family. Ava's dad presses a button on the camera and gets in the group of people for a picture. Some of them were wearing Santa hats and others were wearing red and green sweaters. Rachel was next to Ava with her hand on Ava's shoulder, so were her parents. They all put on a smile as the camera flashed a light into their eyes and snapped a photo.
Ava gets scared awake by the sound of the train horn blasting into her ears. The train had stopped moving. She gasps and sits up and looks around at Lucy, Izzy, and Scar who had also just awakened. Ava stands up and limps over to the train door to peak out to see if it was still bright outside or not.
She grabs the dark rusted metal handle and shoves it open with a lot of her strength. The door makes a horrible scraping sound and opens an inch so she could see outside and still be careful of the sun not burning her.Ava didn't have to worry about getting burned though, it was already night.
"What, where are we? What time is it?" Lucy asks, half asleep and confused. "Ask Rachel where we are. I only know that it's night" Ava says, opening the door all the way with a grunt.
They both stand up and so does Scar. Ava jumps out of the train, Lucy and Izzy sit down at the edge with their legs hanging over the side before pushing themselves up with their arms and jumping out. Ava starts slowly jogging to the front of the train where Rachel is while slightly limping. Lucy and Izzy start following a few seconds after Ava. Ava gets to Rachel and stops running, she tries to catch her breath. "Rachel, where are we?" Ava asks. "We're almost half way out of Pakistan!" Rachel says, happy that the journey's almost over. "That's great!" Ava says as Lucy and Izzy finally catch up to them. "Guys we're in Pakistan!" Ava says, now as excited as Rachel. "Nice!" said Izzy. "Yes!" Lucy said. "Let's continue. We've come this far!" said Ava, starting to walk away from the train staring at the big bright moon that glowed brightly onto her face. Her foot was mostly healed now, it didn't hurt as bad and she could walk on it. Everyone else starts to follow as they all walk across the dry grass field. They look up to see the huge planets in the night sky. You could see Saturn with its huge ring and dusty, tan color. "Wow." said Lucy, in amazement. "Yeah." said Izzy, with stars in her eyes. "It almost feels like a dream." Ava says, getting a fluttery feeling as she watches the planets slowly spinning on their axis. "I never thought of it like that," said Rachel.
They continue to walk forward still looking up at the stars. They ignore the noise of rushing water up ahead, still lost in the beautiful sight.
Ava runs ahead still not looking down. She turns around to face the group to talk to them while walking backwards. "Isn't this great, who knew what wonders the end of the world could bring?" Ava says, looking at them all.
She takes a few steps backward, getting closer and closer to the edge of a cliff. She steps back one more time and steps on air. Ava falls backward off of the ground and catches herself on the ledge. "Ava!" Rachel calls out, running to the cliff. "Oh my god!" Ava says, hanging on for her life. She grips the edge and doesn't let go, a few small rocks fall off the sides of the edge and fall into the thrashing water below. The rest of them get to Ava and kneel next to the edge. Rachel gets on her stomach and grabs Ava's arms, Lucy and Izzy do the same. They pull her up and lay her on the ground. They all lay there trying to catch their breath. Ava, now scared to death, lays there wide eyed and frozen. "Are you okay?" Rachel asks.
"Uh...Y-Yeah!" Ava says, speechless. Ava rolls her foot around, feeling how it moves. Then, she realizes that her broken foot was mostly healed. "That was close." Izzy says, getting off of the hard rock ground and standing up.
They all get up and look at each other, Ava looks over the cliff to see what would have happened to her if she fell. She looks at the water, fifty foot fall, and sharp rocks below. Ava sighs, now shaking with fear.
"Let's go and pretend nothing happened, okay?" Ava says, walking away from the edge and starting to go the correct way that wouldn't kill her. "Good idea." Lucy says, following Ava, secretly being charmed by her and Rachel's accents.
They continue to walk around the river trying not to think of what would happen if they actually were to fall in. They shivered at the thought of drowning like Ava almost did a few days ago. They didn't bother to look back at the sky because they didn't want to accidentally do what Ava did.
They get around the river and continue to walk farther into Pakistan.
Then, they find a road not too far from the river. They follow the road until they come to a small abandoned town. There were crashed cars, ashes blowing in the wind, and no lights. They all get a sad and dark feeling. They start to think of what Ava said earlier of how the world ending was beautiful, but some parts of it were sorrowful, like how billions of people had died and they would never come back. They walk through the empty town close together, afraid. "We should probably look for supplies while we can." Rachel says, not knowing how many things they have. "Good idea, and we don't have any food or water so look for that." Ava says, looking at the trashed stores. Scar growls looking around at the street, clueless of what's going on. "I'll go look for medical supplies." Ava says, walking away from the group and going to a random burned store. The group splits up and Scar comes with Ava. Ava looks around the isles of the store only finding dirt, ash, and a few empty bags. She goes into the back room and finds a med-kit. "This is perfect!" Ava says, looking at the box and then at Scar's clueless face. Scar just sticks his tongue out and smiles. "You're adorable." Ava says, petting Scar on his head. Ava gets on her knees and opens the white box with a red cross on top of it. There were bandages, thread, a needle, antiseptic wipes and a few bandaids. Ava takes her bag off of her shoulder and opens it. She grabs the contents of the kit and puts it in her bag. She buttons the bag back up, stands up, and walks to the front door. She opens it and a weak bell chimes. She walks out and holds the door for Scar. The group meets back up with their things. "What did you guys get?" Rachel asks them all. "I got the medical supplies like I said I would." Ava says. Lucy opens the plastic bag she took and starts counting. "I got twelve water bottles." Lucy says, looking at the group and closing the bag. "I got a few weapons just in case something happens." Izzy says, holding up a kitchen knife. "And I got food." Rachel says, also holding a bag of items. "Okay, good. This was a successful stop." Ava says. They all start walking again. Wondering when the sun will rise and where they will be.
