"Hey, I thought of a plan while we waited for the sun to go down!" said Ava, feeling offended. "Okay, what's the plan then?" asked Rachel, starting the car and turning on the air conditioner, because the car is still hot from the day. "The plan is to drive to Antarctica during the night and to find shelter during the day," said Ava. "Where would we find shelter if we were in the middle of nowhere?" asks Rachel, testing Ava. "I, uh." said Ava, not knowing what they would do on that occasion. "You don't know, do you?" asks Rachel, doubting her sister. "I guess we would have to keep driving," said Ava. "Okay, what will we do when we get there?" asks Rachel. "We would build a house there and live there," said Ava. "What would we build the house out of?" asked Rachel. "Maybe we can get a few things on the way there that could be used to build a house." said Ava "Or we could just live on the boat we use to get there." said Rachel as she slams her foot on the gas pedal so the car goes 91 miles per hour. "That's a better idea." Ava admits.
Thirty minutes go by, Ava is looking out of the window and she sees two people walking on the side of the road. "Rachel, there's someone there, look!" Rachel looks out of the passenger window and sees two girls close to her age walking together. She pulls the car to the side of the road and rolls the window down to talk to them. "What are you doing out there, don't you know what's happening?" asks Rachel, concerned for the two girls. "We know what's happening, we're just going somewhere we think is safe," said the tall, blonde girl. "Where do you think is safe?" asks Ava, wondering if they have a better plan than them. "Antarctica!" said the shorter, red haired, friend. "We're heading there now," said Rachel. Lucy looked at Rachel to see her face for the first time. Rachel was beautiful in Lucy's eyes, the perfect girl. "Do you want to come with us?" asked Ava
The two girls looked at each other and back at the car. "Sure!" said the blonde girl. They both get in the back seat. "What are your names?" asked Ava. "My name's Lucy Autumn!" said the ginger girl. Lucy looked around five foot three, and she has a country accent. She has a white shirt on with ripped blue jeans. "I'm Elisabeth, but you can call me Izzy." said the blond girl. Izzy has long wavy blonde hair, like Rachel's but lighter. She has a British accent and she is wearing a purple shirt with black jean shorts. She looked about five foot nine. Rachel is five seven and Ava is five two. "Nice to meet you, I'm Ava Semonov! And, this is my sister Rachel." "Nice to meet you too!" said Lucy. Rachel, what a nice name, Lucy thinks to herself. "Nice to meet you, mate!" Izzy says, holding out her hand to Ava. Ava and Izzy shake hands and smile.
Two hours later, Rachel stops at a gas station. No one was in the store, everyone had died except them. Everyone gets out of the car. Rachel starts to fill the car with gas while Ava, Lucy, and Izzy go into the store. "Doesn't look like anyone's been here for days." said Izzy, looking around the store. "Yeah, grab some food for the trip. We will need it." said Ava "I didn't bring any money." Lucy said, with a concerned look on her face. "No one's here to take your money, just take the things you want and leave.'' said Ava, looking at bags of chips. "Oh, okay." said Lucy, laughing nervously. Ava looks around and grabs a bag of plain chips off of the shelf. Lucy grabs a bag of sour cream and onion chips and puts it in a plastic bag she got from the checkout line. Izzy grabs a bag of cheese puffs. Ava opens a freezer door and grabs ten water bottles. "Lucy, where did you get that bag from?" asked Ava with her arms full with water bottles and a chip bag. "Where the checkout line is," said Lucy, shouting from the other side of the store. "Okay, thanks!" Ava shouted back, walking to the checkout line. Rachel runs into the store and starts grabbing all of the things off of the shelf. "What are you doing?" asked Izzy. "We need to get as much food and water as we can get!" said Rachel with a tower of bags in her arms.
Ava puts the water bottles and chip bag in the bag. She grabs the bag with water and five other bags for Rachel. She walks back to Rachel holding out a bag in front of her. Rachel dumps most of the chips in the bag. Ava puts the full bag on her left arm with the water bag. She holds out another bag and Rachel dumps the rest of the chips in that bag. Ava and Rachel go to the drink area. Rachel opens the door to the drinks and starts grabbing Coca-cola, Dr. Pepper, Lemonade, Sprite, and more water. The bags get filled and everyone leaves the store and gets in the car. Rachel starts driving again and Lucy and Izzy fall asleep. Ava yawns and lays her head on the back of her seat. She starts falling asleep to the sound of the air conditioner blowing. Ava finally closes her eyes and drifts off to sleep.
"Happy birthday Ava!" said Rachel and her parents. "Wow, thanks!" said Ava as she saw the birthday cake on the table. It is a vanilla cake with green colored frosting. Green is Ava's favorite color, it had been since she was a toddler.
The car hits a bump in the road that wakes Ava up. Ava looks at the car windows and it's raining. "Rain? I haven't seen rain in years, what's going on?" thought Ava with a confused look. "How is it raining?" asked Ava, looking at Rachel "I think the sun evaporated the water in lakes and rivers, so it's raining now." said Rachel.
Lucy and Izzy wake up. "Rain?" said Lucy, looking at all of the car windows. "Why is it raining?" asked Izzy, "Rachel thinks the heat evaporated a lot of the earth's water sources and now it's raining." said Ava, looking into the back seat to face Izzy and Lucy. "That makes sense." said Izzy. "At least we can drive in the rain," said Rachel. "Yeah, we won't have to stop anywhere." Ava says. "Why would we stop?" asked Izzy "So, the sun can't melt the car." said Rachel. "Or us." Ava says, adding to her statement. "Good point." said Izzy, looking at Ava, then out the window.
It rained for hours non stop. The road would start to get slippery at times. The street was starting to flood, but it wasn't impassable.
"Hey, we're in Kazakhstan!" said Ava, pointing to a big sign on the side of the road that says "Welcome to Kazakhstan!" "That's great!" said Lucy. "Awesome!" said Izzy. Ava reaches into the back seat and grabs her bag by the handle. She puts it on her lap and opens the button that keeps it closed. She pulls out a map of the world. She sees that they will go from Kazakhstan to Uzbekistan, Uzbekistan to Turkmenistan, Turkmenistan to Afghanistan, Afghanistan to Pakistan, Pakistan to the Arabian Sea, and the Arabian Sea to the Indian Ocean. "Oh, no." said Ava, folding the map into a small size. "What?" asked Rachel, turning the car to go left. "We have to cross the Indian Ocean to get to Antarctica." said Ava, putting the map back in her bag. "Oh." said Rachel, worried. "They have to have boats at the shore!" said Lucy. "I know, but the tides are going to be dangerous." said Rachel, looking into the rear view mirror. "Yeah, since the moon got closer there will be huge waves," said Ava. "Oh, I didn't even think about that!" said Lucy. "Yeah." said Ava.
Another hour goes by and it's pouring down rain. The road was starting to flood and it was getting harder and harder to drive. "Uh, this isn't good," said Rachel, pulling to the side of the road. "What is it?" asks Lucy. "It's starting to flood," said Rachel. "We need to take shelter. We shouldn't be driving when it's flooding." said Ava. "Right." said Rachel.
"Where are we going to go?" asked Izzy. "Uh." said Rachel, looking around the area. "There!" said Ava, pointing to the distance. "What? I don't see it." said Rachel, looking where Ava's pointing. "There's a hotel over there," said Ava. Rachel drives a little farther. Now, everyone could see the hotel.
"Good find, Ava." said Rachel, starting to drive to the hotel parking lot.
"Thanks!" said Ava, as Rachel turned into the hotel entrance. Rachel parks the car under a tree, a few rows out from the doors. They all grab a few bags and exit the car. They run as fast as they can to get to the entrance. Rachel gets there first and holds the door open for them. Everyone else runs through the open door and Rachel comes in last. Everyone was soaking wet from head to toe. Then, there was a loud rumbling sound coming from outside. There was lightning and thunder, a storm had started. Ava leaves the group and goes to the check in area. "What are you doing?" asked Rachel. Ava hops over the counter and looks at all the keys. "Getting a room." Ava says, grabbing a key card. Ava hops back over the counter and goes back to the group. "Come on, let's go!" said Ava, walking to the stairs. Everyone runs to Ava as she gets to the huge set of stairs in the middle of the room. Everyone starts to walk up the stairs, not knowing where they're going except Ava. "What floor is the room on?" asked Rachel. "Third floor." said Ava, going to the next set of stairs. "Okay." said Rachel, feeling better about where they're going. They walk up the stairs and get on the last set they need to go on. "Why didn't we take the elevator?" Izzy asks. "It would be too dangerous." Rachel says. "Good point." Izzy says. Then, they make it to the third floor. "Now, which room is it, Ava?" asks Lucy. "The fifth room." said Ava, walking past room three.
They walk to room five and Ava unlocks the door with the key card. The door creaks open revealing a dark room. Rachel reaches in and turns on the light which reveals a clean, welcoming room. They all walk into the room looking around at the furniture. The room has two beds that can fit two people per bed, there is a small bathroom near the door, and there is a TV hanging on the wall in front of the beds. Both of the beds are white with fluffy pillows on them and there is a small grey chair next to the window in the corner of the room with a small wooden table. There is a small side table in between the beds with a lamp and remote on it. They set down the bags they were holding and made themselves at home. Ava sits on the bed on the right next to the wall, Rachel goes to the window next to the bed on the left, Lucy sits on the left bed and grabs the remote, and Izzy goes into the bathroom. Lucy turns on the TV and starts flipping through the channels. She puts the TV on a cooking show that Ava and Rachel would watch on Friday nights. Rachel turns around and looks at the TV. She closes the curtains and walks across the room to the beds. Rachel walks through the gap in between the beds and lays on the bed Ava is on. Rachel falls asleep even with the light on, she was so tired from driving for so long. Ava gets off of the bed and turns off the light for Rachel. Izzy comes out of the bathroom looking excited. "The water for the shower works!" shouts Izzy, happy to share the news. "Really?" asks Ava, glad they can take showers. "Yes!" said Izzy. "We should all take showers tonight just in case we can't get to one later," said Ava. "Okay!" said Izzy as she went back into the bathroom. Everyone could hear the water running from the other room as Izzy got in the shower.
Ten minutes later, Izzy comes out of the bathroom with the same clothes on with her hair wrapped in a towel. ''Who's next?" asked Izzy as she looked around the room and took the towel out of her hair. Izzy starts drying her hair as Ava gets out from the blankets.. "I'll be quick," said Ava, sliding off the bed and going into the bathroom. She closes the door behind her and turns on the shower.
Twenty minutes go by and everyone has showered except Rachel.
"Do you think they have any food here?" asked Ava, knowing everyone was hungry and tired. "They might." said Izzy, hoping it wouldn't be old or expired. "We should at least check!" said Lucy, springing up. "Okay, hold on." Ava says, turning to Rachel. "Hey, Rachel. Wake up!" Ava whispers, shaking her sister awake. "Hm?" Rachel asks, squinting at the light from the lamp. Rachel sits up and rubs her eyes. "We're going to see if they have food here, you should probably come with us." Ava says. "Okay." Rachel says, stretching. They all leave the hotel room and walk down the three sets of stairs to the kitchen. One by one, they go into the kitchen and start looking around. Ava goes into the big pantry and looks around. Lucy and Rachel check the fridge and Izzy checks the cabinets. Ava finds a bag of pasta noodles, Lucy finds tomato sauce, and Izzy finds a big pot. "I guess we're making pasta," said Rachel, closing the fridge. "Yep." said Ava. They were all starving, they didn't want to waste any of the food they had gotten from the gas station just in case they needed it later on. Izzy fills the pot with water and puts it on the stove and Ava tears the bag at the top and pours the pasta in the pot. They turn the stove on and wait ten minutes. They stir the noodles and confirm it's done by tasting it. They turn off the stove and pour out the water. Rachel finds four plates and puts them on the counter. They get a wooden spoon and scoop out pasta onto the plates. They add the sauce on the top of the noodles. They all get forks and sit down at the table in the dining area.
After dinner, they all go back to their rooms and get in their beds. They all talk for a few minutes before most of them fall asleep after the long day.
Ava had been distracted from thinking of her parents, but when she got in the bed she was able to have time to remember. She didn't want to think about it, but it was the only thing in her mind. The moment replayed in her head, seeing her fathers' lifeless body. Ava wished she hadn't gone into their room to see if Rachel was lying or not, but she had to be sure. She wished none of this was happening but it was. She wondered if the dream she had was a warning and not just nonsense. She also questioned what it would be like in twenty years. Would she still be alive, would she still be in Antarctica? "Why me? I miss my parents. I want to go home." Ava thought to herself.
