"I am honestly so sorry about Count Olaf." the boy said.
"Please, don't apologise." Klaus removed his glasses to rub his eye (dust had gotten into it), and put them back on. "None of it is your fault."
"He wants our fortunes." the boy responded.
The siblings's eyes widened.
"Our fortune?" he asked in disbelief.
The boy smiled and nodded sadly. "I'm Rowan White. I'm sorry about your home and parents."
"It's alright. I'm Klaus Baudelaire and this is Sunny."
Rowan smiled at her as she greeted him.
"I'm Violet." Violet smiled, the first time she had spoken since the arrival of Rowan.
"Hi Violet." said Rowan.
"Hi." Violet shook his hand.
"No time for silly introductions!" yelled Olaf from upstairs. "The tour!"
They reached a grimy room with a cracked toilet, dirty sink, and mouldy bath. "The bathroom." Rowan said.
They reached a small room, scattered with bottles of wine and one single book that was ripped to shreds. "The library." Klaus's face fell.
They reached a clean room at last, but it was filled with broken tools. "The kitchen." A rat scurried across the room. "The rat bites."
Then, they went into a cluttered, dirty space. "Living room."
Rowan led them upstairs. "This is our room. Whatever you do, do NOT go into the room opposite. Olaf's tower room."
"There's only one bed." Violet noticed. "We can't all sleep in the same bed."
"I'll sleep on the floor." Rowan volunteered.
"No." Klaus shook his head. "That isn't fair. But Sunny should sleep in the bed most of the time. She's only young, after all."
Everyone agreed.
"Maybe..." Klaus continued. "We'll just take it in turns. We'll find a way."
"Guys, I was thinking that we should, like, get to know each other. Tell each other about our favourite hobbies."
"Sure. I'll start." said Violet. "I like inventing, and the best thing that I ever invented was a typewriter that had machinery to produce coffee into a cup when you pressed a button."
"That was such a good invention." agreed Klaus, smiling. "I like to read. The most interesting fact I've learnt was that there is a mushroom so deadly it can kill you within an hour."
"Bite. Carrot." Sunny contributed.
Violet chuckled. "My sister is saying she likes to bite, and her favourite thing to bite is a carrot."
"Those are cool." Rowan said. "I like to draw maps. I once drew a map of the city."
"That's so impressive!" Violet smiled.
"That must have taken a lot of effort!" Klaus smiled.
Sunny bit Rowan's hand very gently. "Cong-"
She was interrupted by a voice. Count Olaf. "I smell wealthy orphans." he teased.
"No wonder you can smell me." Rowan said. "You haven't let me shower in three weeks."
"Be careful what you say, orphan boy." Count Olaf growled. "Unless you want another bruise to add to your collection."
And just like that, he walked out of the room, leaving the Baudelaire children to stare at him in shock.
