Freezing wind whipped around a lone, dark figure as he made his way through the empty city streets, sending swirls of already fallen snow back up into the air in little flurries.
But Shadow hardly cared about the chill, too caught up in his own dark thoughts to really even notice it.
Besides, it wasn't like he could get frostbite, even if he weren't wearing a thick winter coat.
Such was one of the perks of being The Ultimate Lifeform.
His body naturally adjusted to extreme temperatures accordingly, so even if he were dressed for summer weather, he wouldn't freeze.
So why was Shadow the Hedgehog out by himself on the winter's night of Christmas Eve, when everyone else he knew was celebrating with each other at a Christmas party?
Simple.
Yes he had been invited, but this particular party was being held at the home of none other than his rival, Sonic the Hedgehog.
And before you say anything, no, that wasn't the reason he refused to go.
Quite the opposite actually.
Shadow refused to go to this party because he was struggling with owning up to having feelings for the blue speedster, and it was driving him crazy.
He didn't want a relationship, and he certainly didn't want to grow attached to yet another person that he would eventually lose.
It was world shattering for him when he lost Maria, and now that he recently realized he had fallen head over heels in love with Sonic, he knew that he'd be better off staying alone to spare his heart the ache of eventually losing him too.
Or that's what he told himself.
Perhaps deep down, he was just afraid of rejection, and didn't want to cause himself the embarrassment of it if his feelings weren't mutual.
"Tch, I don't know which is worse." Shadow thought bitterly as he kicked a mound of snow in front of him. "All the talk I hear around this time of being with loved ones for the holidays, or that there's a holiday itself dedicated to something so trivial! Love is overrated anyway. All it does is leave you broken hearted in the end."
But he couldn't have been more wrong.
By the end of the night, Shadow would see just how much he really needed love in his life.
Not just from his friends like Rouge and Omega, but the real and genuine love of a romantic partner.

Meanwhile, across the city, in the warm and festive home of Sonic and Tails, Christmas music played cheerfully while Sonic and his closest friends celebrated the holidays together.
Blaze was in the kitchen with Tikal putting the finishing touches on the latest batch of Christmas cookies, Cream was with Cheese and her mother at the kitchen table, writing a letter for Santa, Silver and Espio were decorating the living room, while Rouge and Knuckles were supposed to be helping them, but had gotten sidetracked after coming across Mistletoe, Tails was with Omega trying to explain why there was a tree in the house that was being decorated in lights, and for Sonic himself, the speedster was upstairs in his room, preparing the gifts for all of his friends.
Especially a certain black and red hedgehog that he happened to be in love with.
He wanted everything to be perfect for tonight, because the moment Shadow arrived, he would be looking for the chance to take him aside and confess his feelings, before then giving the hybrid his gift.
