Smile for me

Wednesday
Enid stares at me, her eyes wide and sparkling. After a few moments of this, i can hear her stomach rumbling.

"Right, go hunt then."

She whines and plops down on the dirt.

"You're a werewolf. Go hunt a deer or something. You haven't eaten since breakfast."

She just shakes her head, turning away from me.

"You single-handedly took down a Hyde."

She looks back at me somehow with puppy dog eyes, despite her deadly claws and teeth.

I had suspected this.

"The things I do for you." I mumble, pulling out a peanut butter sandwich from my bag.

She instantly jumps up to four legs, tongue dangling out of her mouth. I roll my eyes.

"Catch." I say, throwing the sandwich into the air.

She jumps up to follow it, catches it in her mouth, and then twirls around in a circle like a dog before sitting down and swallowing it.

The breeze floats through her fur, and she rests her head on her front legs and closes her eyes. She really is a wonder to behold. She's like a daisy, the sun, the cool breeze on a blistering hot day. She has the power to kill, but the gentleness of spring. Usually something I would turn away from, but now I realize that I secretly admire. How such true sweetness can survive in such an unforgiving world.

I take my book from my bag and head over to her. Her ears perk up from the sound of my footsteps, eyes opening, watching me. I simply sit against her back, opening my book, and start to read. The wolf curls her tail to rest on the tips of my feet. When I don't react, she moves her tail to my lap, acting as a blanket. I just read. I can tell she's staring, but after a while, she plops back down and closes her eyes in peace and sleepiness.

I've barely ever felt this serenity before. Mother and Father say that this feeling is what they feel in each other, what they think life is truly about. I haven't really given it a second thought, thinking I'd never find that. That I was better than it. But now I've tasted it. And truly, it's even better than anything I've known. I know I can never leave this feeling. This person. Leaving would be a fate worse than death, and as horrible as it is, I think I understand my father.

As the moon slowly sails across the sky it paints light generously across the tops of the trees. I've nearly finished the book when I feel cold skin against me. I set my book down and grab Enid's coat and shoes. When I walk back, her arms are wrapped around her chest, her legs pulled up to her torso as well. Her teeth are chattering from the cold. I gently put the coat around her, guiding her arms through the sleeves. I then bottom it closed and slide her shoes on.

She looks so tired and peaceful, so I decide to carry her back, it's only a small walk. I make sure to walk slowly so as not to wake her. I make my way through the trees, finding the most level paths.

Soon, we've arrived at the cabin. I maneuver Enid in my arms so that I can twist the doorknob and open the door. I step into the house and close the door with my foot. Walking down the hall I find a comfortable looking room. I set Enid down on the bed, take her shoes off and set them down. Then I pull the covers over her, making sure she's warm enough.

"Goodnight." I whisper, brushing a finger on her cheek and tucking her hair behind her ears.

After I know she's settled, I take of my shoes and set them next to hers. I climb into the bed next to her. At first I think I'm doing it because I don't want her to wake up and wonder where she is, and I do, but mainly I realize I'm doing it because I simply want to.

After an hour or so of hearing her slow breaths, each one making me feel more peaceful, I eventually fall asleep.

Enid
Where am I? I wonder as I sit up in bed. Oh right, at Wednesday's cabin. Where is she? How did I get here?

"Good morning." I hear a voice murmur beside me.

"JESUS!" I scream, seeing Wednesday in my bed, watching me jump out of it with sleepy eyes.

"All I say is good morning and you scream like a banshee." She mutters.

"You... are in my bed." I state, pointing at her.

"Maybe you're in mine. Thought about that?"

I look at what I'm wearing. Just my long coat? Wait... oh shit. Did she see me when I turned back? I cover my mouth.

"Did you see.. I didn't mean to fall asleep last night... shit."

"Not really, you're fine." She states, sitting up and stretching.

Did she think I looked gross? This can't be happening. I begin to hyperventilate. She looks over.

"Hey..." she says, getting out of bed.

My cheeks are red and I might cry. In front of her. She thinks I'm gross. I know it. She's... she put a hand on my shoulder? She's comforting me?

"Don't worry, you were curled up in a ball like a dead spider. I just put your coat and shoes on you and brought you back."

I looked up to see her looking into my eyes with some look on her face. She sees me looking and turns away.

"Dead spider?" I question, laughing.

"A uh, peaceful dead spider."

"You're weird."

"So are you."

"Excuse me!" I laugh.

"I said what I said." She says, almost smiling.

"Wednesday? Can you smile please? For me? I wanna see it."

It's so cute. She's so cute. I can't help it.

She sighs, considering my question. She's actually considering it?

"I don't know why I'm doing this... fine." She mutters, chewing at the inside of her cheek.

She looks back at me, and lifts the sides of her mouth up just slightly.

I literally cannot function. As soon as I see that small but evident little smile, i short circuit.

"OH MY GOD. YOU HAVE DIMPLES?!"
