Chapter 21
Survive.
That was my simple task I had to do over the next three days. Don't get myself killed. Don't go off alone. Don't go near them. Especially Mrs. Amber.
It was kind of annoying at first, honestly. If I just wanted to go outside and smell the fresh air, I had to be accompanied by someone. Someone always had to be at home with me. Yes, I didn't like the fact that I really didn't get a moment to myself, but I knew I didn't have an option. I was their only hope.
I could be the start of something BIG. And something as foolish as wanting my privacy didn't exactly match up to the thought of changing a way of life.
So, this morning I was out on a morning walk, accompanied by Jack, Devon, and Nick. I just thought it'd be nice to get out of the house for a little bit, trying to act like everything was as normal as possible.
It was beautiful out, the sun rising and creating a glow affected over everything in touched. It made the remaining leaves on the trees seem transparent while it creaped through the branches it beamed upon. The air was crisp, fresh, and had the hints of winter approaching. The smell of the forest gave off a musty, earthy smell. Weird, how that was one of my favorite smells.
As we walked through the familiar leaf colored dirt path, the same one me and Jack first traveled by, Jack and Nick kept talking about how to attack the enemies.
"Should we surprise attack them, or make a formal attack where we meet them somewhere?" Jack asked Nick.
Nick gave him a questionable look. "Why on earth would we meet them somewhere? Do you wantto get yourself killed?" He shook his head like the utter thought was ridiculous. Jack seemed to almost shrink back a little in embarrassment.
"Oh, well, um sorry....just a thought!"
"Well it was a stupid thought. Honestly...this isn't fair game. They don't deserve fair game! We need to finish the job as quickly as possible, and that requires surprise!"
"And just how were you planning on doing this? Hmmm?" I asked him. He opened his mouth as if to speak, but then shut it in defeat of not knowing. I, on the other hand, crossed my arms and gave him a look of satisfaction. "That's what I thought."
"Well, I'm sorry. If you're so smart, oh powerful guardian wolf, whats your plan?" He asked with sarcasm dripping in his voice.
I thought about this momentarily, my eyes looking ahead into the rising sun. It would be a difficult task to defeat these guys. It wasn't like we could just barge right in and be like 'Hey! We're hear to defeat you! Please don't kill us!'. It would have to be complicated, quick, but easy to follow. I would need to be protected, but the thought of people putting their lives on the line for me...it sent chills up my spine.
No. I couldn't think like that. These people openly volunteered to help me for their own benefits. They knew what they were getting into. But maybe....
"Maybe you guys don't have to fight." I suggested. This stopped all of them in their tracks, with mouths hung open, looking at me like I had three heads. I think I actually saw Nick's eye twitch a little...
The first to break the silence was Devon. "Um....what are you talking about? How the heck are you supposed to live if we don't fight back? Because they obviously want you dead."
"No! I mean...what if they don't fight?"
I could tell Jack was trying to see my perspective on this, his face revealing that expression he always makes when hes in deep thought. "But, Elsie...why wouldn't they fight? They could be coming for us now for all we know! We have to be ready...at least lets make a defensive plan!"
