"Holly, be careful,"
Vanessa said as they were in the backyard that was full of snow.
Karen had called the girl this morning to ask if she could watch Holly. Even though it was last minute, the girl agreed. She was trying to get as much money as possible before Christmas. There were only a few days left, and Vanessa needed to get presents soon.
Eddie would be real easy, knowing what stuff he would want-usually, music and anything to do with his precious guitar. In contrast, she always got Wayne one of his favorite movies or a pair of new boots. It wasn't much, but they both appreciated the gifts very much.
The only person she didn't know what to get them was Steve. He didn't seem complicated to shop for, but Vanessa didn't want to go overboard. Getting him one or two things would be fine, but she still needed to figure out what.
Holly giggled while still running around. Throwing snow everywhere she could. A smile spread across Vanessa's face as the little girl was having the time of her life. That's how it should be when your kid instead of worrying about adult things.
"Nessa," she called, making the girl stand up. "Can we go inside now? I'm cold.".
Vanessa nodded, "Yes, honey." She picked up the small girl before bringing her inside. Telling her about the hot cocoa, she would make and what movies they could watch together.
The blonde had been busy all morning. Babysitting and trying to study when Holly was down for a nap. She didn't even have the chance to call her best friend, who was impatiently waiting to hear from her.
Steve stood by the counter at work with the phone next to him. Picking it up every time it rang only to be disappointed by the voices on the other end. He practically lived at work, and his best friend knew that. It wasn't likely of her to call the house, so maybe something must've come up.
The two teens haven't hung out since their night of doing donuts in a random parking lot. It wasn't that Vanessa didn't want to talk to him, but she thought a little distance was needed.
And maybe that was because she was scared of admitting the truth to herself.
Scoops had been pretty slow since opening this morning. Most people were coming into the mall wanting to shop first. So the business was sure to pick up soon. Steve just hoped he would get a call before that.
"Steve," someone said as he looked up to see who it was.
His coworker Robin stood there with narrow eyes as he had been sitting by the phone all day. It was obviously for a reason.
