"So how did the date go?" asked Davey

"So how did the date go?" asked Davey. His words were directed to me but his gaze was zoned in on the doorway Leah had disappeared through. He was nibbling his bottom lip and his brows were furrowed. Davey only ever got that way when he was confused. Something was going on. First Leah was acting weird when he walked in and now, Davey was being weird when she left.

"It went well. I'm thinking to propose to her."

"Yeah, sounds great." I knew he wasn't listening.

"Yeah, I'm thinking we wait a month and then Zack is on break from school and we can have a Summer beach wedding." I leaned against the kitchen wall, crossing my arms over my chest, watching my brother. He wasn't paying attention. All he was doing was staring at the ground. "Then if we plan it right, Zack can have a new baby brother or sister by next year." Now I was just shooting the shit and still, it got no reaction from him. "Maybe then we could work for twins. It runs in her family so you never know."

"What!" I jerked away from the wall quickly.

"Leah!" Shit. She wasn't supposed to hear any of that. She looked angry.

"Hey Leah." Davey stepped forward with his arms open but Leah didn't give him a moments attention. She pushed her hand against his chest and stormed towards me. I gulped.

"You have some nerve!" She was shouting with every thud of her steps. I glanced behind her to Davey, hoping for some help but all I got was a glare. What the hell was going on with him? "You spend all afternoon going on about how distracted I am and how little attention I'm giving you when you've been holding out on the biggest secret yet. I thought I was important to you."

"You are-"

"I thought you cared about me."

"I do-"

"And yet you tell Davey you're getting married and having children but not me!" Her sudden screech and distraught expression tore at my soul. All the fight left her body when tears suddenly dripped down her cheeks. I couldn't wait any longer. I gripped her in my arms tightly. She fought and tried eagerly to wriggle her body out of my grip. It was no use. I held tight and stuck my head in the dip of her neck and shoulder.

"I'm sorry. It's not true. Let me explain." I continued to whisper the words in her ear, repeating them in a desperate cycle. Eventually her body stopped its wiggling and she stood still. I gave her an extra tight squeeze and then stepped back only far enough to look her in the eyes. "I was joking, about all of it. Davey wasn't listening. He kept staring at the doorway like it had all the answers to life behind it. It was irritating so I started saying shit, waiting to see when my crap would get his attention. It clearly didn't work because, as always, you're the only one listening when I talk."

"Wait, what is going on exactly?" asked Davey, jumping his eyes between us both.

I pointed towards my brother. "You see what I mean."
