My gut hadn't been this twisted in almost eight years

My gut hadn't been this twisted in almost eight years. Back then I at least knew what I was walking into. I didn't have that luxury now. The outcome of today couldn't be nearly as painful as last time but, there were more possibilities today; more unknown variables to consider. It set my body to stone.

Davey didn't look to be varying any better. He'd been quiet the whole drive to the restaurant. "Are you doing alright?" I asked Davey, paying careful attention to his tightly pulled forearms.

He cleared his throat. "Why shouldn't I be? The last I saw Spencer I'd punched him and now I get to have dinner with him." I cringed. Davey let go of the steering wheel and reached across to pat my thigh. "I'm kidding. I'm not going to lie, I'm nervous. So are you." He looked at me long enough to wink. "But I know we'll get through this. The fact Spencer suggested this idea works in our favor."

"How do you suppose that?"

Davey shrugged, putting both hands on the wheel to turn. "If he was still resentful, he wouldn't suggest I be with you." He had a point.

"Still weird."

Davey's laugh was loud. "Yeah, there's no getting away from that." Davey pulled into an open parking spot and shut the engine. I reached for my door handle but Davey's arm on my shoulder stopped me. I turned towards him when suddenly all the air was taken from my lungs. His lips pushed on mine, hard. His hands were holding my head in place as though he was scared I'd pull away. As if. I'd only been dreaming of this day since I was seventeen. Davey's kiss was soul absorbing. I had no choice but to let my body slip like jelly and surrender. His tongue pushed through my lips and his taste was an exciting experience. My arms reached for his shoulders as I leaned closer, wishing I had more space to feel him around me completely. He was warm and his stubbly jaw scratched my skin electrifying every nerve ending I had. My chest burned forcing me to pull away and gasp for air. Davey's hands never left my face. He bent down and continued placing kisses around my face and down my neck.

"Wow, um," I took in a deep breath. "What was that for?"

Davey pulled his head out from the crook of my neck and grinned towards me. "I figured that if today went to shit and ruined us, I needed to at least know what a kiss from you would be like."

I laughed and dropped my head to his shoulder. "Get it out of your system?"

His head rubbed over mine, "Hell no. It's made me more determined to keep you." He lifted my head up and placed a gentle kiss on my lips. "Come on, let's go before I change my mind and take you home with me."

I groaned and pulled away to reach for my door. Once we were both outside the car, our hands interlaced, I looked at Davey and said in all seriousness, "This dinner better be quick."

His answering growl set my body on fire.
