"We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars."
― Oscar Wilde, Lady Windermere's Fan.
Chapter Twenty Two>>
"What are we going to do?" I question stepping behind the rest of the group, hand shoved into the holes of my black cotton hoodie.
"Well, if Jackson doesn't remember being the kanima, he definitely isn't going to remember stealing Danny's tablet." Scott replied sighing.
Stiles huffed. "Why would he steal the thing if he doesn't even know what's on it?"
"What if someone else took it?" Allison chimed in.
"That would mean that someone else knows what he is." I concluded staring off the edge of the cliff at the wide open space.
"Which could mean someone's protecting him."
Allison nodded. "Like the bestiary says 'The Kanima seeks a friend,' right?"
"Okay, hold on." Stiles interrupts. "So somebody watches Jackson make a video of himself turning into the Kanima and then just erases part of it so he wouldn't know? I mean, who would do that?"
"Somebody who wanted to protect him?" Allison answers unsure.
Scott shook his head. "There's something else. You said the only thing you found online about the kanima was that it goes after murderers. What if that's actually true?"
"Well, no, it can't be." Stiles doubted. "It tried to kill all of us remember? I don't know about you two, but I haven't murdered anybody lately."
My mind was spinning, trying to put all the pieces of the puzzle together. Chilled air exhaled from my lungs. A small puff of smoke lingering in the air.
"What if it wasn't trying to kill us?" I question. Scott nodded like he was thinking the same thing. "She's right. When we were at Isaac's it went right by us, right?"
Allison agreed. "You're right. It just ran off."
"And it didn't kill you two at the mechanic's garage." Scott pointed out. Stiles shook his head. "Well, yeah, but it tried to kill Jenna, Derek, and I in the pool."
"I don't think it did, Stiles." I contradict.
"It would've. It was waiting for us to come out." He argued. I shook my head. "What if it was trying to keep us in?"
A shocked expression floated onto Stiles' face. "Why do I feel so violated all of a sudden?"
"Because there's something else going on. We don't know what it is. We don't know anything about what's going on with Jackson or why someone's protecting him." Scott rambled.
"Know thy enemy." Allison muttered. My head swung towards her, confusion etched into it. "What?"
She shook her head, giving a small smile. "It's just something my grandfather said."
"All right, I got it. Kill Jackson. Problem solved!" I rolled my eyes, a smile touching the ends of my lips.
"Unfortunately, we can't kill him." I answered shutting down the idea.
"What? Why not?"
"He risked his life for us against Peter. Do you remember that?" Scott defended. I rolled my eyes.
"Yeah, after he screwed up and told Allison's dad everything that was happening. He also got the bite out of it which undoubtably turned him into his true form: a snake. Seems like he got what he deserved." I countered.
