Taking dad's blue vintage pickup truck, I drive up into the city to meet Regina. We were very close when we were at university together and also briefly lived together after graduation.
She got a job in New York shortly before I left the country, and the two of us just sort of lost touch afterwards.
Arriving at the restaurant we agreed on, I smile when I immediately recognize her red convertible Chevy, the same one she had back on campus.
When I finally spot her at a table in the corner, we both gasp and squeal in elation, doing several cheek kisses while we hug, causing a few people around to look at us strangely.
"So...." she murmurs sitting down. She tosses her brunette hair over her shoulders and rests her chin on her palm while looking at me with a huge grin on her face.
I toss my equally dark hair that usually made people think we were sisters over my shoulder too and settle in my seat opposite her.
"So, what happened? I thought you lived in New York now?" I ask lightly.
"Oh that." she frowns and waves her hand down.
"I quit." she supplies.
I smile at the comment, somehow that doesn't really surprise me.
"My boss was an asshole, the hours were horrid and everyone there was just miserable ......I tried to suck it up, really I did, you know me, but ultimately it was either I quit with dignity, or I get fired and arrested for assaulting my boss." She says and I laugh.
"But then I couldn't just come back home because I made such a huge fuss to my family about leaving and having my independence......." she emphasizes the word 'huge' and I laugh again.
"I remember." I say in memory.
Like me, she comes from a very close knit and protective family.
"Yeah..." she laughs too.
"So anyway, I tried to get another job and eventually, I did, but it didn't pay much, the money all literally went to cover my rent...New York is expensive, and it just wasn't sustainable. A few months in and I was pretty much ready to throw in the towel and come back home raising my white flag and my tail tucked between my legs. I was even ready to come and work at my dad's restaurant." She breathes.
But luckily, I got a really good offer at Sydney & Co Ad. agency, and it helped me to save face just in time." she concludes with a chuckle.
"Wow."
"I know right......lucky bitch." she gloats.
"What about you, still travelling the world and all, are you on a break?" she asks enthusiastically.
It's funny how outsiders have this view that I was moving from country-to-country globe-trotting, when I have only been to two countries in total during my time away.
