Steve's Pov
"Yeah...this'll do." I said as I looked around the old junkyard.
There was enough open space to leave the big pile of beef chunks that we had talked about on the rest of the walk over here, and there was also enough clutter that we could use to armour up the bus.
"Oh, look! There's our help." Dustin smiled as he looked at two people walking over to us in the distance. I recognized one, but not the other. I started walking around and minding my own business. I was breaking off pieces of old car and dragging it back over to the bus. The girl with the red hair, who I now knew was named Max, was helping me.
The other two shitheads were literally nowhere. I started walking around the junkyard, looking for them. I heard them talking so I started following the sounds of their voices. I found a chair on my way over to them and dragged it with me.
They were sitting on the floor behind a car, literally right in front of the bus.
"No more secrets, okay?"
"Okay"
I banged the chair on the back of the car. I watched them both jump at the sound.
"Hey! Shitheads! Why is the only one helping me is this random girl?"
They both stared at me blankly.
"Let's go!" I shouted at them again.
"Alright!"
"Jesus!"
They stood up and started helping us. Our goal was to make the bus Dart proof. It had to be a safe space for us to stay and watch our plan unfold.
I left the kids to finish the bus and dragged the two buckets of beef chunks a few feet in front of the bus. I dumped both of them out onto the grass and walked back over to the bus to grab the tin of gasoline. I made a trail of it from a little bit in front of the bus door all the way over to the pile. I poured what was left in the tin over the chunks and hoped and prayed that Dart would still want it.
I walked around the bus and made sure that all the pieces of old car were secure against the car. Once I was sure, I walked back over to where the kids were sitting and sat down with them.
When the sun started to set we got into the bus and the waiting began. I was sitting on the floor of the bus, playing with the lighter. Sinclair was on the lookout on the top and Henderson was pacing. Max was just staring out the window.
It was pretty relaxing to just sit here and do nothing, but there was also the remaining panic of the danger that was coming. The sun had completely set and we were sitting in almost complete darkness. Dustin's pacing just grew louder and quicker by the minute.
"Dude, can you stop pacing?" I asked his quietly and he completely ignored me.
I sighed and leaned my head back on the wall.
"Are you guys sure of what you saw?" Max asked us as she stood where she was sitting.
"Yes" Dustin breathed out.
"And...you're sure it wasn't a bear?"
"Shit, don't be an idiot! It wasn't a bear. Why are you even here if you don't believe us? Just go home." Dustin snapped at her.
I smiled to myself as she looked at him stunned. He was using my advice. Things were going to turn out well.
"Someone's cranky. Is it past your bedtime?" She mocked and started climbing up the ladder.
