"I just don't understand. How is Will speaking?" Jonathan repeatedly asked as we got into the house. Hopper got a piece of paper on his way to the table and sat down. Everyone huddled around him and waited for him to explain.
He started writing down dots and dashes on the paper.
"What is that?" Steve asked from behind me.
"Morse code." The kids and I answered.
"H. E. R. E." Hopper read out.
"Here." Everyone repeated back.
"Will's still in there. He's talking to us." Hopper explained as he looked around at all of us.
"Well, what do we do?" Jonathan sighed as he looked around the room.
"We have to talk to him." Mom said.
"Get him to remember us and who he is." I concluded.
Everyone nodded and Hopper started to hash out the plan. After everyone understood, we all dispersed once again.
I walked into Will's room and started grabbing anything that could jog his memory. I picked up stuffed animals, pictures, and toys. I looked around the room once more and turned onto my heel. I bumped into a hard chest and dropped everything on the floor.
"Shit!" I cursed as everything crashed on the ground.
"Sorry." Steve whispered quietly as he helped me pick them up.
"It's fine." I sighed as I took some of them from him and started walking towards the shed, assuming he was still following me. I put my things down on the ground in the shed and Steve did the same. I looked over at Will's limp body and sighed.
This had to work. It had to.
"Sof, let's go back inside the house."
I nodded and followed him towards the house.
"Hey, I'm sorry." Steve whispered as we walked up the stairs into the kitchen.
"It's fine, Steve. We already picked up the toys."
"Not that. I'm talking about the other day."
"Steve, not right now please-"
"No, Sofie. You deserve an apology. I was being a jerk and you didn't deserve that. I acted way out of line and it was wrong. I'm sorry."
"It's okay."
"No, it's not okay. I was trying to control you like I owned you. What can I do to make it better?"
"It's okay Steve. I'm over it. Everything is okay now." I reassured him.
He nodded and I knew he wasn't entirely convinced, but he let it go.
"So, how are we doing this?" Jonathan asked once we were all together again in the kitchen.
"The same people should go into the shed so that the Mind Flayer doesn't question if there's different people. He could assume that we're somewhere Will will recognize." I said.
"Okay, same people in the shed. We'll talk to him, tell him stories to try and get through to him. I'll use the walkie to click the morse code to you guys and you'll write it down. We'll put him back to sleep once it's done." Hopper concluded.
Everyone nodded and dispersed to their post. I felt a hand on my shoulder before I could step out the door.
"You okay?" I turned and asked Steve.
"Yeah. Don't worry, Sof. It's gonna work." He reassured.
"I hope it does." I smiled sadly.
Once everyone was in position, we started. Everyone told their story. We explained his toys and pictures while Jonathan blasted "Should I Stay or Should I Go?".
It had finally come down to my story. I took a seat in front of Will on the ground.
"Hey buddy. It's Sof. Do you remember that day, mom and dad were fighting about your baseball game? You were really upset because dad didn't want to go to your game even though he was the one who forced you to play anyway. We were sitting in Jonathan's room. He was playing his latest mixtape for you. You really liked the songs and you were happy. We had a dance party to drown out the sound of mom and dad arguing. Jonathan hugged us both and told us that no matter what, we would always be there for each other. We would fight for each other no matter how hard it got and we still are. We're not giving up on you. I know you're in there. We wanna help you." I set my hand down on his knee, and just like that day on the field, I was shot out of my body and into the void.
"Sofie! Sofie! Help me!" I could hear Will's panicked voice screaming for me.
"Will! Will where are you?!" I was trying to look for him, but I couldn't see anything. There was so much wind. It was trying to push me away.
"Sofie! It's coming for you! Run! Hide!" Will shouted.
"Where are you?!" That was the last thing I said before I was back in the shed. I felt all my energy draining and I fell back against the chair behind me.
Will looked like he had just been in the void with me.
"Sofie, are you okay?!" Jonathan asked as he pulled me up off the ground.
"What just happened?" I asked him confused.
"You and Will just closed your eyes and were gone. Then you were back and both of you shot back. Your nose is bleeding."
I reached up to my nose and felt the blood running down my nose. Mom had replaced me in the chair and was talking to Will, making sure he was okay. Suddenly, the phone started ringing inside the house and then it stopped. A few seconds later, it rang again. This time louder than before. We all heard it which means Will had heard it too. He looked towards the door and closed his eyes.
"Will? Will!" Mom and Hopper shouted trying to get him to stop.
"He knows where we are." Mike concluded.
"Put him to sleep!" I shouted as Hopper.
They put him to sleep and we started cutting the rope off of Will. Those things knew where we were and they were coming. Once Will was untied, Hopper picked him up and we ran towards the house. We needed to prepare. The demodogs were coming.
