"Buzz Cut Scene"
Due to Xiao Bei being stuck in the police station, he was unable to protect Chen Nian from her bullies. Chen Nian was beaten, her clothes were ripped, her hair was cut, and her humiliation was filmed. Xiao Bei comes back to her, enraged that he failed to protect her. Xiao Bei silently cries as he buzzes off the rest of her damaged hair. When he finishes, he buzzes off his own hair. They use a phone to look at their new hairdo and take a picture.
RECEPTION
'Better Days' is Jung Sol's debut Chinese film. Sol studied the Mandarin language extensively for this role, even passing the proficiency exam. Half of the film Sol has a buzzed hair, which turns out to be just a wig. Jung Sol stated that she found 'Better Days' to be the most difficult movie she has ever filmed. During bullying scenes, she was near breaking down but stayed strong for the film.
On Rotten Tomatoes the film has an approval rating of 97% based on reviews from 40 critics, with an average rating of 9.3/10. On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 91 out of 100 based on 60 critic reviews, indicating "universal acclaim". Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film a rare "A+" grade on an A+ to F scale. The film also received a rating of 8.4/10 on Chinese film rating cite Douban and a 9.4/10 score on Chinese ticketing site Maoyan. The film topped the list of MovieWeb's Best Chinese Movies of the 2010s.
Cary Darling of the Houston Chronicle stated that it was "one of the best films of the year" and that it "deserves a wide audience".
Despite the film's gruesome nature, it became unexpected blockbuster. 'Better Days' has earned a total of $1.02 billion. It is the second-highest-grossing film of 2023 and the highest-grossing Chinese film of all time. The production company was just looking to make back their $30 million dollar investment but got back over a 100 times more. 'Better Days' grossed more than $314 million dollars on its opening weekend in China.
The film cause greater discussion all over the world surrounding it's story. In fact, there are three of them: a story about high school bullying, a story about the high pressure put upon teenagers to perform well academically, and a love story about two teenaged outsiders finding strength in each other's presence. As a result from the uprising topic, a inhumane bullying case came to light. The case became famous and people from all over the world called for justice.
