it was bound to happen eventually. the moment every single teenager in california's been dreading has finally arrived. it was the first day of school.

while most students just try to get by in high school, things were different at harbor in typical newport fashion. the harbor school was prestigious, which meant its graduates were destined for the ivy league and other top college offers.

on this somber monday morning, savannah cohen was sitting at her kitchen table across from her brother, staring down at the bagel on her plate as she anxiously dreaded the school day ahead of her.

"first day of school, are you excited?" kirsten, who was pouring some orange juice by the counter, excitedly asked her kids. she wanted this to be a good year for them, especially for seth after his difficulty to make friends last year.

neither of them responded, just giving her a look of despair. "you know, i ask you guys questions in the hopes of eliciting an actual response."

"i feel i convey more with a look." seth commented flashing puppy dog eyes.

"you look adorable!" kirsten smiled in awe.

"no." he monotonously denied looking away from her.

"cute?"

"no."

"dope?"

"no."

"rad!?"

savannah groaned having enough, "please! please this is so painful!"

"ah, i'm sorry, sorry." the woman laughed, redirecting her attention to her husband who just walked in, "how was surfing?"

"cut it short, i wanted to see the kids off." sandy told her. "you went surfing without me?" savannah shouted out looking rather offended before her father just gave her a 'well' look.

"doesn't seth look rad?" she pointed, pushing the painful joke further. "oh you do look rad, mad props son!" sandy agreed trying to follow up with a slang term.

their two children shook their heads in horror of their parents terminology before ryan walked in from the glass sliding door.

"thank god man, are you ready to go?" seth questioned immediately hoping he would say yes.

"first day, are you excited?" sandy questioned ryan, who proceeded to give the man one look that perfectly conveyed how unhappy he was. "enough said." the man nodded getting the idea.
