the cohen kitchen was bathed in the soft morning light filtering through the windows, but the atmosphere was anything but serene. a single wedding invitation sat in the center of the marble countertop, its elegant gold embossing catching the light. it was almost mocking in its extravagance.

kirsten stood beside the island, arms crossed, staring at it like it had personally offended her.

"two weeks."

savannah, walking in behind seth and ryan through the sliding door, barely had time to process what was happening before kirsten spoke again, louder this time.

"two weeks. unbelievable." she let out a short, incredulous laugh. "who would believe it? i don't believe it."

savannah frowned, still half-asleep, reaching for a mug. "sorry?"

seth, already awake enough to cause trouble, plopped onto a stool and smirked. "ah, it's the tourette's flaring up again. it happens every now and again, but it's fine."

ryan, standing beside savannah, reached for the invitation. "julie and caleb's wedding invitation," he read aloud, flipping it open. "getting married in, uh—"

"two weeks," kirsten cut in again, worked up all over again. she gestured wildly toward the invitation, her voice rising with every syllable. "i mean, i just—i-i don't understand. what is the rush?"

right on cue, sandy strolled in, looking entirely too amused for the situation. "honey, it's the gruesome twosome," he said, reaching for the coffee pot. "what'd you expect? it's the shock-and-awe approach to courtship."

kirsten shot him a glare. "julie cooper is marrying my father, and you're being flip?"

sandy shrugged, unbothered. "me being flip about caleb? no, i'm actually kinda softening on the guy. he may not be friendly or ethical or, y'know, a million laughs—"

"but he is?" kirsten prompted, waiting for the punchline.

"generous," sandy admitted, leaning against the counter. "boy, either that or he's in love and delusional, because he threw out a ballpark figure for what he's offering jimmy and me for the restaurant... and it ain't chump change."

kirsten let out a dry laugh, shaking her head. "so he's bought your acceptance."

sandy smirked. "but at a very high price." he turned to savannah. "hey, how's marissa dealing with her new stepdad?"

kirsten softened slightly, her frustration momentarily giving way to concern. "yeah, is she... is she okay with all of this?"
