the room was dark, save for the faint glow of moonlight slipping through the blinds. the steady hum of the ocean in the distance was almost enough to lull ryan to sleep—almost.
"ryan," seth whispered.
ryan kept his eyes shut. maybe if he ignored him, he'd go away.
"ryan, hey, hey man, are you asleep?"
ryan groaned, shifting slightly on the air mattress. the floor was uncomfortable enough without seth's incessant whispering keeping him awake.
a second later, a lamp flickered on, casting a dim yellow light across the room. ryan squeezed his eyes shut, already regretting every choice that led him to this moment.
seth scooted down toward the end of the bed, watching him. "ryan, are you asleep?"
ryan let out a low, annoyed noise, rolling onto his side.
seth sighed. "yeah, i can't sleep either." there was a beat of silence before he sighed even louder, for dramatic effect. "i know what you're gonna say—you know, she hasn't technically dumped me yet, but it's only a matter of time, right? so what do i do? do i force a confrontation? or do i just continue to be whiny and passive-aggressive until she realizes what a catch i am?"
ryan didn't respond.
"ryan?"
silence.
"ryan, ryan, ryan, you asleep?"
ryan exhaled sharply, rolling over with a frustrated glare. "yeah."
"oh, okay, sorry. i'm gonna let you go back to sleep, okay? 'cause as bad as things are for me right now, they're much worse for you, so—"
ryan's eyes snapped open. "what?" he sat up, brows furrowed.
seth shrugged, barely holding back a smirk. "well, i'm just saying, you know, at least i'm in my own bed not sleeping. you're on my floor not sleeping."
"because you won't stop talking," ryan muttered, rubbing his face.
"yeah, but also because your ex-girlfriend is sleeping in your room," seth pointed out, his tone casual but clearly enjoying stirring the pot. "to the dismay of my sister, who you just started dating."
ryan sighed, already regretting engaging in this conversation. "savannah's fine with it."
"sure she is, buddy," seth said, nodding sagely. "the same way you'd be fine with it if, say... luke was sleeping on her couch. it's cool."
