Chapter 19
Sam and Natalie didn't take their gaze off the waterfall. They were standing there for a good long time. Natalie breathed in and out as if she were expecting a baby. She was not pregnant of course, but she looked as if she were ready to give light to a newborn in the wretched world. Sam observed her every once in a while. First he gave her a glimpse, then at the waterfall.
"You must think I'm cruel to have caused that pretend crash and have Gannon and Garret pass out." said Sam.
"It was to protect them." said Natalie softly.
"Do you remember our promise on our wedding day?" asked Sam.
"How can I forget." said Natalie.
"Well, no matter what happens today, I'll be there for you. You know that." said Sam.
"The Eternal Winter Curse. For many, it is a beautiful thing. Snowing in summer, casting a magical early Christmas upon humanity. For us, it is a spell that will give us all hell." said Natalie.
Sam chuckled. "Since when have you been negative? You're so full of positivity that it's impossible to imagine you like this."
"Sam, I'm afraid. I'm afraid about our lives. Our future. Our children. We're both parents Sam! Parents! We're not newly wed couple that's just starting. Tyrone and Matt are our boys! This curse, should it continue, it could kill them! I don't want to lose our boys, Sam. I don't." said Natalie.
Sam walked up to his wife and hugged her softly. "We won't lose them. We will fight for them. We will save them from this winter. Mark my words." said Sam.

A few years ago
Sam didn't want to go to the party. He didn't want to. He was tired of it all. Tired of the same boring narcissistic people who go there, tired of the gossip and the hypocrites. All those classmates of his were so full of themselves. And the worst part of it all? They were all human! They were not wizards, goblins, or even vampires and merfolk. They were humans. Normal people who had no idea of the hidden world and most of them were cruel to other classmates who were not like them.
Sam himself was never popular. He was a lonely young man who people avoided. Some of his classmates even went as far as to say he looked like a future gunman. No. Those people were wrong. Sam was the son of the most famous BogeyMan in all of Rood Bridge Park. And he was actually sent to a human school! Why? Because his parents wanted him to learn how to speak and talk with humans. Of course. Sam was part of that experiment. A lot of rich and powerful politicians and even common folk in Rood Bridge Park have secretly sent their kids to human schools to learn the ways of the world. It's been successful. Most children would return to Rood Bridge Park and spread what they learned. Sam sometimes wished he wasn't part of that. It wasn't that he looked down on humans. No, not at all! It's just that he witnessed how others BULLIED others because of how they dress, how they look, their skin color, their weight, and their social class. He noticed how divided humans were on subjects that could easily be solved in Rood Bridge Park, such as race, gender, politics and wildlife conservation.
In Rood Bridge Park, everyone was celebrated and problems were solved with grace. At times. But the human world didn't have magic. And Sam was forbidden to use his Dark Impulse powers in the human world. His older sister, Ava, hurried him.
"C'mon, we're going to be late for the dance!" she said.
"Do we have to go? Nothing happens at those parties." complained Sam.
"Would you rather stay at home and play video games all day instead? What would father say if he saw you playing games now?" snapped Ava.
"He would actually be okay with it. Remember that Dad loved watching his hockey games." said Sam.
