Miguel stepped out of the confining car and made his way towards the building his daughter was going to be executing her first tournament in. The man felt almost like he was even more excited for her than she was herself. He crossed paths with another parent who he had seen going to games every now and then. He smiled and she smiled back.
"Who are you here for?" Asked the women with a full head of beautiful bouncing brown curls.
"My little girl, Gabriella." Miguel smiled back at her as they walked into the building.
"And you?" He asked in return.
"My son, Miles. My husband desperately wanted to go, but he's a policeman and they needed him on the job today." The woman sighed.
"Sometimes work calls for things that seem highly unethical as far as family matters go." Miguel chuckled, relating to the woman.
"That's a perfect way to put it!" The woman smiled, "may I ask you name?"
"It's Miguel. Yourself?"
"Rio." It's nice to meet you!" Rio extended her arm for a hand shake.
"Pleasure." Miguel shook it, "looks like their game is about to start. Let's head in."
Miguel always enjoyed watching his daughter play. She was very angelic and graceful in everything she did and he was proud of her for it. Her feet danced across the turf, cleats digging into it like teeth. He bought those for her special for this occasion. He went out to the sports store while she was asleep, her long lashes kissed her freckled cheeks. When he was at the store he asked for the best pair they had, he didn't mind the cost. He'd splurge if it meant something special to him and Gabriella. He remembered how wonderfully excited she was when he gave them to her. Her eyes lit up and she looked at him in shock.
"But, I have cleats!" Gabriella's smile was still wide, these were the shoes she had been wishing for since she had started soccer. Miguel had told her to wait until she was sure that soccer was what she enjoyed most. And it became clear very quickly that she planned to keep up with the sport.
"I know you do, but I told you I'd get them for you when the time was right. And your first tournament is this Saturday!" His grin wide.
"Oh, thank you!" Gabriella was tearing up as she hopped from where she had been sitting at the park, on a picnic, with Miguel.
She swung around Miguel and wrapped him in another one of her love saturated hugs. The kind that enveloped all of Miguel's feelings and thrust them outside of himself.
"Of course." He buried his face into her shoulder and held her tight, as if about to lose her.
They stayed like that for a while, both of them enjoying the company they provided. They were very content with each other and often found themselves scrambling to show each other something they had accomplished. For Gabriella it would've been an art project, math test, or science facts. Miguel would've shared stories from Alchemax, research, new discoveries, fun facts. Fun facts were Gabys favorites, often she would beg for him to get straight to the facts and skip the rest of the day.
Miguel smiled to himself. Just thinking about how her face would quirk up over even the smallest things that brought her joy, did the same for him.
Miguel heard the buzzer go off and refocused his attention to the game at hand. He shifted on the bleachers. Who's lovely idea was it to have people sitting on metal bars for hours on end? And on top of that, there was no back so along with creating a dent in your ass by the end of the tournament, you also left with bad posture plus fabulous pain too. Not his ideal seating arrangement.
By the end of the tournament Miguel felt almost as tired as Gabriella.
"I told you you would win!" Miguel looked to his daughter who had the most extensive grin on her round face, brown eyes shining.
Miguel loved the way Gaby was cradling the shiny new metal in her hands. She earned it after all. He was glad to see her so proud of herself. He was glad to see that his daughter was happy. Heck, he was happy because his daughter was happy. He sighed, Miguel was relieved that he could give his daughter the childhood he never got to have. To see her smile everyday, to see her proud of what she had done and be more than willing to share it with her father. It truly warmed his heart.
"I'm so proud of you!" Miguel bent down and scooped her up into his arms.
Gabriella giggled all the way back to the car. A wonderfully successful Saturday for the two of them.
That night, after Miguel had kissed Gaby to bed, he slipped into his suit and left their apartment. He knew she could handle herself for a little while, he had done it before, he can do it again.
As he was swinging from building to building, using the red webs he was able to create with the help of his AI assistant, lyla, who he had created as an extra pair of hands around the lab and consequently, and an extra mouth too. He still wasn't quite sure as to why he gave her a conscience, but he did.
On his way to his lab, something caught his eye. Something among one of the last things he was expecting to see. There was another figure swinging from building to building no further than fifty feet away from him.
"Hey!" Miguel called to the mysterious person.
He stopped swinging, stopping on a building in front of the shadow. The figure stopped in a low crowch in front of him before standing straight.
"Oh hallelujah! I thought I'd never catch up to you." The man pulled the spider-like mask from his head and Miguel watched as he ran a hand through his blonde hair.
"The names Peter Parker, and I'm like you."
