The fear that Gabriella had fostered during her first tournament had since diminished. Miguel was relieved that he no longer had to give the pep talks. He wasn't very good at them and most of the time, Gabriella ended up laughing which he supposed was just as well.
"Are you excited?" Miguel asked from the drivers seat, looking at Gabriella in the mirror.
"Super excited! But Papa, I think I'm going to need new cleats soon. My toes are touching the tips now." Gabriella said, fiddling with one.
"How about afterwards we head over to a sports store? Theres a new one downtown that we can check out." Miguel suggested.
"Yeah!" Gabriella exclaimed.
The pair pulled up to the same warehouse-like building they had been to four times before. The car grumbled across the gravel and came to a halt in front of a plethora of glorious chrysanthemums, their beautiful petals sprawled across their green leaves. They dappled the boring building with splatters of magnificent color. Miguel noted the strange choice of flower to display in front of a tournament building full of young and lively children. Never the less, he still found them to be quite beautiful.
"Go on in cariño. I'll follow shortly. I'm just going to wait for Peter B so he knows where to find us." Miguel smiled, unbuckling his seat belt.
Gabriella nodded, opening the car door.
"Te amo Papa!" Gabriella blew a kiss before shutting the door and jogging over to the entrance of the building.
Miguel sighed before rummaging around in the tote bag on the passenger seat for his rapture. Some day he would be free of it. But not today, and not for a lot of days to follow. After injecting himself he did what he had told Gabriella he was going to do. He got out of the car and stood by the entrance of the warehouse. Soon enough, Peter B came trotting around carrying a box.
"Hey Migs!" Peter B called.
Miguel turned his head towards where the voice was coming from, "Hey Peter. Glad you could make it." Miguel smiled briefly before offering to take the box from Peter. "What do you have in there?" Miguel asked him, looking down at the container and raising an eyebrow.
"A few cupcakes like Mj promised for me!" Peter B told Miguel, lifting the lid to reveal the three petite cupcakes sitting inside. Each one covered in thick creamy white frosting. Vanilla, Miguel assumed.
"Those look great. Thanks Peter." Miguel looked up to see Peter staring at him, his gentle brown eyes creasing at the corners because of the happy smile spread on his tall face.
Flustered by the fact that Peter was probably looking at him for the entire time he was admiring the cupcakes, he felt his face warm.
"Well, do you want to head in?" Miguel cleared his throat and pried his eyes from Peter to gesture at the door.
"Thats probably a good idea!" Peter piped up.
Miguel and Peter watch Gabriella dominate the field. She was often at the front, the ball between her feet before she would send it flying over to another teammate.
"She's good!" Peter B laughed, impressed.
"Its her passion." Miguel shrugged, looking at Peter.
Peter and surprisingly Miguel, were very loud with their cheering. Miguel would stay seated but every now and then Peter B would leap to his feet and cheer Gabriella on. Miguel liked seeing Peter B like this. He knew Peter B was going to make a good father and quite frankly, he couldn't wait for Mayday to be old enough to properly play with Gabriella. He could see the two of them getting along well. At least, he hoped they did because he wanted to spend as much time with the Parkers as his free time let him. He didn't want to admit that factor, of course, but there was no use denying how he felt about their family. They accepted him and Gabriella with open arms. They took care of Miguel when he needed it most, and even when he didn't. Peter B made sure he ate and Mj was always there, working from behind the scenes.
The score during the last two minutes was 6 to 4, Gabriella's team in the lead. The ball traveled back and forth before the buzzer finally wrung its loud blaring cry of victory.
This time, Peter and Miguel stood up and cheered together. The parents and couples around them gave them weird looks, as they had been doing throughout the game, but Peter B didn't mind, and therefore neither did Miguel.
Afterwards outside in the back of the building Miguel and Peter stood waiting for Gabriella to come out and greet them.
"Papa! Peter!" She yelled in triumph.
"Gaby!" Miguel chuckled loudly, picking her up as she swung around him.
Miguel lifted her onto his shoulders and Peter B reached into the box and pulled out a cupcake for Gabriella. After handing it to her, Peter B ran over to the Chrysanthemums and plucked a blue one from its stem and traveled back over to where Miguel was spinning with Gabriella on his shoulders. Peter B stopped the two from continuing to twirl so that he could stick the flower in Miguel's hair.
"What?" Peter pouted after Miguel gave him a weird look.
"I thought it would look good with your eyes!" Peter B said sheepishly.
"Awww!" Gabriella giggled.
Peter pulled out his phone and began to record.
"We did it this time!" Gabriella smiled.
"Okay! Okay mija!" Miguel laughed with Gabriella.
At some point, Gabriella had managed to smear her cupcake on his face.
"Good job, kid." Miguel beamed, lowering her from his shoulders.
Off camera, Peter B pointed to the cupcake smudged on Miguel's face and Miguel used his thumb to wipe it off, laughing quietly as he did.
Gabriella then ran off to join her friends and Peter B stopped recording.
"She's a special one." He whispered too Miguel, pressing up against his side.
"She is." Miguel agreed, gently wrapping an arm around Peters side and drawing him closer. Peter gasped and looked up at Miguel who's face had gone red.
Peter B decided not to say anything and instead rest his head against Miguel's chest and watched Gabriella play with her friends.
The two of them wished the moment would last for forever. But it didn't.
There were sudden screams.
