A good six months or so had past and Peter had begun to notice a change in Miguel's whole demeanor. He kept his head lifted a little higher and he lost the droopy eye bags that had ruled his sad face during the weeks prior to Peter and Mj taking him in. Miguel was more chipper too. Every time he woke up, with his charcoal hair splayed in every which way around his face, he greeted Mj and Peter, no matter if they were awake or not, with a gentle kiss to the cheek or forehead, which ever was more accessible, before getting up and out of bed. And on the days that Miguel had been up working later than he should've and was extra exhausted and slept later than Peter and Mj, he'd roll over into the sheets every time Mj and or Peter would try to get him up before they would finally be able to coax him out with Mayday.
"Alright, I'm off. I'll see you boys after work tonight!" Mj said grabbing the keys that sat pleasantly waiting by the door.
"Bye hun! Have a great day." Peter called, blowing a kiss while Miguel waved softly.
Mj blew a kiss back to her men before closing the door and leaving.
Mayday sat babbling on Miguel's lap cooing up a storm as Miguel let her play with his fingers.
"So, who's gonna watch her at work today?" Peter asked walking behind Miguel's chair to give him one of his signature shoulder massages.
"You. I've got a lot on my plate today." Miguel said, arching his head back to look up at Peter who leaned down and gave him a quick peck on the lips.
"Thats what you said yesterday!" Peter complained, smiling.
"Not true! I had her all day yesterday and made absolutely no progress!" Miguel reached up with his free arm and lightly play slapped Peter in the face.
"Ok, you got me with that one." Peter admit, leaning down over Miguel and scooping Mayday up.
The day at HQ was pretty straight forward, everything ran the way it was supposed to, Lyla kept everyone busy with something and Peter found himself at rest. He was just relieved that Miguel was finally beginning to relax back to his normal, quiet self. No more midday breakdowns that required Peters immediate attention, no more being on high alert for trigger scenarios or words that would set Miguel off, no more having to defend Miguel's drastic change in behavior to the other spider people.
As much as Peter knew how hard it must have been for Miguel, he could help but also feel such a burdening weight of responsibility for Miguel. He felt like it was his job to take care of him. It was his job to make sure that he was safe. It was his job to help be a grounding point for Miguel. And of course Peter knew this wasn't healthy but he wasn't going to let Miguel suffer on his own. He did all that he could, and it had paid off.
Peter stopped by the caffateria the way he always used to, and picked up a few empanadas for Miguel, the way he always used to. He continued on his way to Miguel's office. His Miguel's office, the way he always used to.
"Miguel! Lunch!" Peter sung up to the platform before watching it lower.
Miguel stepped off and ran a hand through his hair.
Miguel, Peter had noticed, always ran a hand or two through his hair when he was thinking of something.
"Miguel, what are you thinking about?" Peter asked tenderly as he handed Miguel the box containing the empanadas.
Peter followed Miguel over to the couch, awaiting a response from his lover.
Miguel looked at him with big guilty eyes, his face a little harder than it had been.
"You can be honest." Peter told him, sitting down beside him as Mayday gurgled against his chest.
"I was thinking about Gaby again and," Miguel paused, "and Peter." Miguel admit, looking down to open the container.
"Thats ok. What about them?" Peter questioned, placing an arm around Miguel's back.
"That I miss them. And that I wish I had spent more time with Peter and that I had taken more videos of Gaby." Miguel was being more willingly vulnerable than Peter had seen him in a long time.
"I wish I had more to offer, but, we never got around to watching that video I took of you and Gaby during the tournament."
Miguel looked at Peter.
"Want to watch it?" Peter asked.
Miguel nodded his head and leaned into Peters gentle touch. Peter reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone. The pair sat in comfortable silence as they watched the last video Miguel had of his fleeting daughter.
Mayday had begun to fiddle with Miguel's hair which caused Peter to look at him. When he did, he saw the peaceable tears falling from Miguels eyes as they traced the edges of Peter screen.
Peter squeezed Miguel's arm and kissed the side of his head. As the video came to an end the three sat in the quiet for moments more before Peter reached into his pocket for a second time and stood up from the couch before kneeling down in front of Miguel.
"I know this is kind of sudden, but something told me to ask you now." Peter uncupped his hand to reveal a small box that he had kept concealed in his palm.
"And I know the last time you were engaged things didn't go as planned so I would completely understand if you didn't wan-"
"Yes. Peter yes." Miguel melt from the couch to meet Peter on his knees to give him a huge hug.
When Miguel pulled away, he had tears in his eyes once again, but a more welcomed kind. As Peter slipped the ring onto Miguel's finger Mj came around the couch and gave Miguel a hug from behind.
"Welcome to the family."
