Later that night, Peter B knocked on his own door with Miguel lagging behind him.
Peter B heard Mj's soft footsteps from behind the door before she gingerly stuck her head out to see who it was. When Peter B made eye contact with Mj, he smiled and she unlocked the door.
"Hey!" She greeted him with a warm hug and a kiss on the cheek before her gaze drifted over to where Miguel had hung back, his whole face drawn tight. "Oh, hey Miguel! Peter didn't tell me you were coming! If I knew I would've thrown on something a little nicer." She said, gesturing to her pajamas.
"Are you here for dinner?" Mj asked, taking into account his solum face.
"He's going to stay the night." Peter B spoke for him.
Mj's eyes widened slightly and she beckoned for Peter B and Miguel to follow her indoors.
Once inside, Mj gestured to a chair at the dining table for Miguel to sit at. Miguel gave a curt nod, sat down, and watched as Mj dragged Peter B out of the room.
Once Mj had Peter to herself, she let out a huge pent up sigh. She ran a hand through her gorgeous auburn locks and Peter B watched them fall perfectly into place again. She was perfect. Of course, he knew that.
"Peter, look. I know Miguels struggling right now and it's understandable, but we're also struggling. Financially and with Mayday. We both know that our schedules are extremely hard to juggle around taking care of mayday. With work, friends, and such it's becoming a real challenge."
"I know," Peter butt in, "but he really needs our help."
"I'm sure he does! But I just don't think we can afford to-"
"Mj, he doesn't have a home." Peter whispered, his voice drenched in empathetic sorrow.
Mj was silent for a moment more, as if considering, but she still wasn't convinced.
"He could help around the house! And, and he has money, I'm sure he wouldn't mind helping pitch in while he stays with us! Also, he could look after Mayday for us when we can't. I bet it would be good for him to spend time with her." Peter, at this point, was now practically pleading for Mj to agree. Peter honestly couldn't think of the last time he had felt a need for something this badly. Other than the time he lost Mj.
Peter B watched intently as Mj glanced around the room, as if waiting for the walls to speak up and give her the correct answer.
"Fine." She huffed.
Peter B leapt into the air in enveloped her into a tight bear hug, bouncing back and forth as he did.
"Thank you, thank you so much Mj." Peter peppered her in kisses before the two of them traveled back into their cozy dining room.
There, Mj and Peter B saw Miguel gazing at a family photo of the three of them, Mj, Peter B, and Mayday, from a distance. The were quiet, letting Miguel process any unfinished thoughts before Mj spoke up.
"Petes, whats for dinner?"
"Food." Peter B gave a sneaky smirk which earned him a punch to the arm from Mj.
Miguels attention was caught by the odd pair. He watched as they bickered over what was for dinner before they inevitably settled on lamb.
"Hey Miguel how about you and I hang out with Mayday while Peter B cooks? It's his night to cook. Thats why he didn't want to do the lamb because "It's difficult!" To which I told him he was the reason he found it so hard."
Miguel let out a brisk quiet noise that he had tried hard to make sound like a laugh before he was dragged to his feet by Mj's gentle hand around his bicep. She led him into the other room, where Mayday sat in her pack and play, giggling up a storm. Miguel felt a strange mixture of emotions at the sight of such a happy little being so unknowing of the world around them. Miguel began to wonder how she would react if she suddenly knew about everything around her. Would the little girls first reaction be to cry or to laugh? To shed tears of joy or fear?
What weird thoughts he had been thinking lately.
"Mayday, you have a visitor! Say hi!" Miguel watched as Mj walked over to Mayday and picked her up. Mayday fizzled at the sensation of rising from the ground in which she had been writhing on previously.
Mj then walked back over to Miguel and offered for Miguel to hold the little bundle of light, to which Miguel declined abruptly.
"Sorry." He whispered, crossing his arms around his waist and tucking his hands into his sides.
Mj nodded, understanding how Miguel felt. She then went to sit down in a humble cushioned rocking chair. Miguel followed her and sat down on the red ribbed couch across from her. The pair talked for a while while Mj rocked Mayday back and forth gently against her front. Shortly, Mayday fell asleep and Mj went to put her down.
Miguel got up and went to help Peter B set up the dinning room with plates and napkins.
Once the table had been set and Mayday put to bed, the three adults sat down and ate the inviting meal Peter B had wonderfully prepared. If Miguel was being honest with himself, he never would've guessed that Peter B was a good cook, but this proved him otherwise.
A few times during their meal, Miguel had watched silent conversations pass between Peter B and Mj's eyes. It made him oddly self conscious, wanting to be in on the secret. Finally, as their relatively quiet dinner had begun to come to an end, Peter B spoke up.
"Miguel, look, we want to clear some stuff up with you."
Miguel nodded his head slowly as Peter B talked.
"We pretty tight financially and making sure we spend time with Mayday around our schedules has been hard, but we want to offer you something." Peter B continued, "would you like to stay with us?"
