Kayden pov
People are just so easy to manipulate.
Why does everyone have the need to prove that they can get anything they want?
People are ready to pay any price just to show that they are superior to everyone.
They aren't.
Nobody is.
You'll always find someone better than you.
This is what keeps me going.
My life is the pack, my soul is this pack.
I won't do the same injustice that they did to the pack members.
Before I could think about the incidents that led to me becoming the alpha of this pack my beta, Jason, interrupted my chain of thoughts.
"Speak." I say while going through the guest list of the meaningless Annual Werewolf Ball.
"You do realise that you are not the one hosting this ball, right?"
My beta looks at me questioningly.
I give a blank hard stare.
"I would like to be prepared as much as I hate all of them and I still have to go to this ball for the sake of the pack." I say.
"Kayden." Jason speaks, suddenly changing his tone stern from light.
"Continue." I say not looking up.
"Why are you going to this ball? And don't say that it's for the sake of the pack. We both know that the pack is better then it has ever been." He solemnly.
I freeze for a second before I regain my composure."I need to socialize." I say, not even believing myself.
Jason scoffs. "A rock is a better conversationalist than you."
"I gave you the answer. If you're not satisfied with it feel free to use your imagination to think of a reason that satisfies you." I say.
I go through all the packs that are supposed to come. I need to know the approximate people I will need to interact with.
"I feel sorry for whoever ends up becoming your mate. She might actually die of lack of entertainment." Jason counters leaning against my desk.
He is the only person who can speak to me like this without stuttering.
This is one of the reasons he is my beta.
He is not afraid to speak his mind.
Others just start trembling like leaves around me.
They are terrified of me just because I didn't hesitate before putting someone in the dungeon for failing to show up to training on time.
I'm not cruel.
I just have certain expectations.
I allow normal pack members to live their lives as they please but my warriors should have immaculate skills and manners.
Not being punctual, is quite offending.
The bastard's just lucky to be alive.
"Jason, I have specified many times. I have no intentions of finding my mate. "
It's true.
This topic is one of the few topics that I am confident that I won't change my stance in.
I despise the concept of mates.
People staring into each other's eyes, going on dates, getting flutters by just seeing some is all fairytales and rainbows.
It doesn't work that way in real life.
"You will change your mind. I know that you are tough but I've seen the coldest souls show affection towards their mates." Jason says in a British accent, impersonating a wise soul.
"If you're done with your antics, I would appreciate some alone time." I say gesturing towards the door.
"I'll leave. I'll leave." Jason says putting his hands up.
He turns around to leave and shouts something before leaving."I still don't believe you about the ball!"
He's just deluding himself.
I'm going to the ball to build alliances with other packs.
Mostly.
No.
Yes, Definitely.Just alliances.
I walk over to the bookshelf as I take a key out from behind a book.
I move a few folders around and find the safe.
The Bane of my existence.
I turn the key around in the lock and the safe pops open with a click.
I take a deep breath as I open it to look at the thing that has taunted me my entire life.
The same picture.
The eyes.
The same stupid place.
Just not changing every time I open the safe.
I have to admit that sometimes I hope that it disappears from my life.
Yet, I can't bring myself to get rid of it.
