"Bye, love you," Eight-year-old Y/N told her then-best friend while hanging up the phone.

"You love her?" She heard her mom laugh from behind her. The girl immediately felt ashamed; she always felt that way when she showed affection in front of her mother.

"She's my best friend," Y/N tried to defend herself.

"For now," the woman said dismissively. "Relationships never last."

"But you and Dad got married because you love each other," Y/N pointed out.

"Y/N, love is not real. It's just an invention from movies," her mother replied coldly.

Deep down, Y/N couldn't help but feel a pang of confusion. If love wasn't real, why did it feel so important to her? And what about family? Because she loved her mom and dad. Didn't her parents love her? The girl questioned herself, but her young brain struggled to find an answer.

"Now put on the dress because the Smiths are coming in an hour." The woman handed her a white dress. Y/N hated wearing dresses; they were uncomfortable and restrictive. But she always did what her mom wanted her to do.

"I want you to impress them, show them how well-behaved you are, and be a good friend to their two young kids," her mom instructed.

"Yes, Mom," Y/N replied with a smile.

Y/N was taken out of her thoughts when Tokki barked at her, trying to get her attention. The girl rubbed her face in annoyance. It had been three days of being stuck in her head, reminiscing about things she didn't want to remember.

"OK, that's it. I'm going out," Y/N sent a text message to the group chat shared with her friends. She then made sure to feed her dog and ensure he had water.

As minutes passed and she didn't receive a reply, she picked up her phone and called Hussey.

"Hey,"

"Hey, Hussey," she replied excitedly. "Wanna hang out?"

"I am actually with Intak right now. He asked me out on a date," Yuna responded.

"Oh, okay. Are you coming back soon?" Y/N asked, but the girl seemed too engrossed in her date to hear the question.

"Sorry, what?" Hussey asked, momentarily distracted.

"Nah, nothing," Y/N replied with a hint of disappointment.

"By the way, Jennifer has an extra practice, so she probably won't pick up the phone," Hussey informed, her giggles indicating her lack of attention to the conversation.

"OK, I'll see you later," Y/N said with a sigh as she hung up the phone. It seemed like her friends didn't have much time for her these days.

The American picked up her phone once again and dialed a number.

"Hello?" came the voice on the other end.

"I want to get wasted, but with no questions asked," Y/N blurted out.

There was a short silence before Wonyoung replied, her tone filled with a mix of curiosity and amusement.

"Sure, why not?"

"I'll be there in 5," Y/N responded, determination evident in her voice.

She quickly gathered her things, threw on a casual outfit, and headed out the door. In a few minutes, she would be meeting Wonyoung for a night of forgetting and letting loose, with no judgments or probing questions. It was exactly what she needed to temporarily escape from the weight of her thoughts and emotions.
