Morgan and I made our way to the front door once done with breakfast. My chest began to tighten as we walked together out to the dock that goes out on to the lake where Pepper was already waiting for us. She gave us both a sad smile as we got to her but I didn't know Chibbs was hesitating coming out there with us. I saw Pepper motion to him and looked back to see him now heading towards us to join. Silently Pepper held out the wreath we had made and her, Morgan, and I knelt down and placed it on the water but before letting it go we each placed an envelope on top with the letters we had all written to Tony. As she let it go a tear fell from each of our eyes and I could hear Morgan sniffling a little. "I miss him," was all she said in her shaky voice. I instantly wrapped her in a hug and held her tight as her tears began falling harder. "I know baby, I miss him too," I said trying to keep my voice steady. Chibbs watched silently as we stayed there for a moment, not really knowing who we were doing this for, but knew it had to be someone I really cared about as he could see my pain written on my face. I pulled Pepper into the hug with us and we stayed there for a moment longer before heading back to the house. The rest of the day I did what I do best and distracted everyone from the very obvious pain we were all feeling. By the end of the night I had Morgan worn out and when she asked for me to be the one to tuck her in I didn't refuse. I told her a story and tucked her in before giving her a kiss on her forehead. As I was leaving the room and shutting the light off I heard four words I hadn't heard in a long time, "I love you 3,000." I turned back and hid my heartache with a smile as she looked up at me innocently. "I love you 3,000 too kiddo," I replied trying not to let my pain show. As I quietly shut the door it took everything I had to not breakdown right there. I noticed Chibbs and Pepper both standing there and Pepper gave me a sad look. "Your suit still in the lab downstairs?" I asked as I started walking past her. She nodded deciding it would be better to just say nothing. I walked away from them both and I heard Chibbs mutter something but he was smart and waited until I was far enough away that I couldn't make out what he said. I heard Pepper snicker a little before I walked all the way down stairs and put the code in to get into the lab. It made me think of needing to this back at home too, but I knew it wouldn't do me any good.
I had lost track of time as I worked on improvements for Pepper's suit and I didn't know that she had walked in and had been watching me while I worked. She finally rapped her knuckles on the doorframe to signal she was there and I glanced up to see her smiling at me before continuing what I was doing. "Ya know," she started as she leaned against the doorframe, "It still amazes me how much like him you are. I stayed silent not trusting my voice to hold steady. She watched as I refused to meet her eyes and smiled before starting to walk closer to me. It was then I noticed Chibbs standing there and watching us. "It's how I always knew when something was wrong with one of you and if you were both in the lab at the same time, everyone knew to stay away," she said giggling a little as she remembered the times she would find us in a lab together working for hours on ways to improve everyone's suits and weapons. Finding ways to make sure our friends and family would be safer and make sure they came home. "Always trying to save the world, even from itself," she said coming to stand next to me. I stopped working on her suit and turned to push a button on the computer. They heard the mechanical sound as I now moved to the rack that was rising from the floor. On the rack was a smaller version of the suit Pepper wore. Chibbs stared in awe as Pepper walked over placing her hand on the suit giving me a confused look. I pressed a button on the center of the chest where the light of a miniature arc reactor was placed to power the suit. The suit retracted into a necklace and I carefully placed it in Pepper's hand. "Make sure she wears this at all times. I installed a tracker into it as well. If she's ever in trouble all she has to do is push the button and the suit will activate itself and the tracker," I said before moving back to the computer and pushing the button to lower the rack. "I know you don't want her flying this young so it isn't set to take off, but it will send out an alert to you, me, the team, and Fury to notify them she is in danger," I stated still refusing to meet her eyes. She immediately walked over and wrapped me in a hug as tight as she could. She let me go and headed back upstairs giving Chibbs a small smile as she passed by him. I continued working and ignored the stares he was giving me not wanting to talk anymore. He sighed but decided to leave me be, making his way up to the room we had been sharing.
Hours later Chibbs woke to the sounds of grunts and thuds coming from outside. Pepper came running into the room, startling Chibbs. "She found something that was left for her, it won't help if I go out there," she stated leaving the question unasked. Chibbs nodded and quickly got up throwing on a pair of shoes before heading outside to where I was. He noticed I wasn't hitting the tree with my metal hand and as he got closer he started to see the blood that was running down my arm. He heard me sobbing quietly and ended up moving quicker so he could stop me from hurting my hand worse. I yelled into his chest as I tried to push him off but he held me as tight as he could, knowing I wouldn't risk hurting him again. I had found a video that Tony had left me and my walls had finally come crumbling down. Pepper watched, tears now streaming down her face as she watched me finally fall apart, something she knew I had avoided doing for too long. All she could make out of my jumbled words was that it was supposed to be me, not him, making her heart break even more for me. Once I was calmed down Chibbs helped me up and into the house. He took me upstairs to the bathroom and set me on the counter. Silently he cleaned up my hands and I kept my eyes on the ground. I had never really processed everything, trying to be there for Morgan and Pepper as well as other members of the team. Then everything with Steve had happened and I went back home. Once my hand and arm were cleaned up and bandaged, Chibbs walked with me back to our room. Pepper followed us in and once Chibbs had me settled into bed, Pepper sat on it next to me. I had rolled away from her, ashamed that I had been so weak and forgot about how much this must be affecting Pepper. She began to stroke my hair trying to give me any comfort. "Honey, you can't keep blaming yourself for what happened," she said quietly. Chibbs stayed back but something in him wouldn't let him leave me here in this moment. "Look at me," she said making me turn to face her. She placed a hand on my cheek, trying to use her thumb to wipe away the tears I had spilled. "There is nothing any of us could have done, to stop him. He knew there was still a chance you could die had you tried to do the snap and he wouldn't have been able to live with himself if he had let you take that risk," she said gently. I shook my head and took a deep breath, "But why, I was strong enough I could have handled it?" She put both her hands on my cheeks, cradling my face as a single tear fell from her eye. "You are his daughter, you may not be blood, but he loved you as much as he did Morgan, the same way he loved Peter. He couldn't take that risk hunny," she replied and I felt my heart break more. She held me until I finished crying and had long past fallen asleep. Carefully she got up so she wouldn't wake me up and walked over to the door with Chibbs. Before stepping out she stopped and turned to Chibbs with a small smile. "Do me a favor and take care of her will you," she asked and without leaving with an answer she snickered a little at the surprised look on his face. Chibbs watched me sleep for a minute thinking about everything he had been a witness to, today. When he went to move past me to get settled on the couch, my hand shot out in my sleep and I wouldn't let go of him. Deciding not to fight it he climbed into bed with me and wrapped me tight in his arms. I rolled over and buried my face into his chest. Without thinking he pushed the hair back from my face and placed a gentle kiss on my head before falling asleep with me.
The next morning I woke up in bed alone and I could hear Morgan giggling from in the hallway. I smiled as I heard her and someone else come closer. I quickly shut my eyes and listened close as they made their way in. Morgan carefully set the tray of food down on my nightstand before reaching up and gently shaking me. "Sissy, wake up," she said gently as she shook me a little more. I opened my eyes and pretended to be waking up as I rubbed my eyes and sat up. "Hey kiddo everything ok," I said as I picked her up and sat her on the bed with me. She nodded and motioned to Chibbs. "Lil' Lass insisted on doing breakfast in bed," Chibbs said as he carefully lifted the tray of food and set it on the bed in front of me and Morgan. Chibbs hand brushed mine as he was pulling away and I was reaching for one of the glasses of orange juice on the tray. I blushed as Morgan rambled on about how she helped make it all and there was enough for both of them. We sat and talked throughout the morning and ate the breakfast slowly. Pepper was down stairs doing dishes and laughing at us, when Chibbs walked back in after calling to check in with everyone back home. He hadn't told them about last night and had no intention of doing so unless I did first. Eventually Morgan had to get ready for some tutoring sessions she had for the day so Chibbs and I began packing things up and getting ready to head back to Charming. Pepper would drop us off at the compound and then from there we would head home.
