After their Divination class, Harry and Ron returned to their usual selves, with Harry's mood seemingly improving a bit. They headed straight to their next class, Defense Against the Dark Arts. (Y/n) wondered how Professor Umbridge would go about teaching them.
To their surprise, the sight that greeted them was almost surreal. There, perched behind the teacher's desk, sat Professor Umbridge, clad in her signature fluffy pink cardigan from the night before, complete with a peculiar black velvet bow atop her head. The image was so peculiar that (Y/n) couldn't help but imagine her as a toad with a whimsical cough.
The atmosphere in the room was tense but hushed, like the calm before a storm. Nobody dared to make a sound, for they were uncertain of what lay ahead. Professor Umbridge's reputation as a disciplinarian was yet to be discovered, leaving the students on edge.
Breaking the silence, Professor Umbridge chimed in, "Well, good afternoon!" Her voice was sugary sweet, yet it carried an undertone of something unknown.
A few timid voices responded with "good afternoon" in reply.
She shook her head in a motherly disapproval. "Tut, tut," she tutted, her eyes gleaming with authority. "That won't do, now, will it? Let's try that again, shall we? I'd like each one of you to say, 'Good afternoon, Professor Umbridge.' All together now, let's hear it!"
(Y/n) glanced at Hermione, their expressions mirroring each other—puzzled yet intrigued.
"Good afternoon, Professor Umbridge," the class chanted back, trying their best to comply.
Professor Umbridge's smile widened, satisfied with their response. "There, now," she cooed. "That wasn't too difficult, was it? Wands away and quills out, please."
As Professor Umbridge began her Defense Against the Dark Arts lesson, a sense of dreariness spread among the students. The mere mention of "wands away" was usually followed by a mundane and uninteresting class. (Y/n) reluctantly stowed her wand back in her bag and took out a quill, ink, and parchment, preparing for what seemed like another lackluster session.
With an air of authority, Professor Umbridge retrieved her unusually short wand from her handbag and rapped it sharply against the blackboard. Instantly, words appeared on the board, signaling the topic of the day:
"Defence Against the Dark Arts A Return to Basic Principles"
Turning to face the class with her hands neatly clasped in front of her, Professor Umbridge addressed them. "Well now, your teaching in this subject has been rather disrupted and fragmented, hasn't it?" Her voice was poised but tinged with a hint of condescension. "The constant changing of teachers, many of whom did not seem to have followed any Ministry-approved curriculum, has unfortunately resulted in your being far below the standard we would expect to see in your O.W.L. year."
