Tris and Tobias were next door neighbors, and had been best friends since they were kids. She had a huge crush on him, and she was about to confess when he switched factions. Tris was shocked, hurt, and miserable. She knew about what was happening to Tobias at his house, but she didn't know it was bad enough for him to change factions. When Caleb also changed factions, Tris knew she had to stay to protect her parents from criticism. It ate at her, knowing that she might never see Tobias again. Tris went on to marry Robert, who joined the Council. One day, he bought the Dauntless Representative, Four, and his wife, Christina, home for dinner. Tris was speechless. It was Tobias. Her best friend. When they were alone, she couldn't help herself. She needed to do this for closure.
She stepped forward and kissed him.
