Chapter 44

“Why are you still here?” I sobbed into my hands. “Stop torturing me!” I bit my lip to stop myself from screaming.

I felt a gentle hand on my shoulder, and I tensed. Emma sighed, “I’m sorry my visions cannot last longer. Since I used up most of the energy to bring you to your town on planet Earth instead of another spot in the universe… I barely have enough energy to keep you there for too long.” She sounded so helpless. “But I also came to tell you something, Luna.”

I raised my head and looked straight into her eyes. The depths of her eyes swirled with conflict.

“Don’t trust my half-brother, Luna.” Her eyes hardened to stone. “He’s becoming unpredictable these days after what you did to him.”

“What?!” I blurted out in shock, “What I did to him?! What did I do?!”

She shushed me, “You’re the only one whose been able to defy him” She explained. “He’s conniving in his quarters as we speak—he’s looking for ways to make you talk.” Her eyes grew sad and she looked down briefly.

I felt a strange satisfaction at hearing that, but now was no time to smirk.

“Anyway!” Emma switched subjects, “I have news for you—the portal will open in a months time.”

I stayed silent.

“…You can’t be serious.” Emma narrowed her eyes in disbelief. “You don’t understand the significance of this?!” She seemed downright shocked. “You can go home!”

“What? You’re letting me go home?!” I was suddenly smiling like crazy, and my emotions did a one-eighty. I felt my energy rush back, but as soon as I looked at Emma’s guilty look, my heart plummeted. “I…I’m not going home?” My voice cracked. But you just said I could! I wailed to myself.

“I…I have a plan.” Emma visibly gulped, and I was immediately intrigued. Dang. Sad, happy, sad, then curious… these are pregnancy side-effects, right? I shook myself and focused my attention on Emma, who was just opening her mouth to speak.

Then, all of a sudden, there was a loud bang. I jumped, but embarrassingly Emma and Caleb did not. Huh, I’d forgotten Caleb was here…. Emma sprung up and sprinted away so fast she was a blur. My mouth dropped as I realized what just happened. She abandoned me! I curled up into a ball as I heard the ominous door to the dungeon open.

My attacker’s voice reached my ears, and I swear even my unborn baby shivered. For some reason he wasn’t speaking English, but it made it all the more suspenseful.

Sweet, sweet Emma talked back in the same foreign tongue and all I could do was imagine what they were talking about….

If Silver were here, I bet she’s know what they were talking about…. The dungeon door opened and closed loudly, and Caleb and I were alone.

“I don’t trust either of them.” Caleb growled. “That girl, her powers seem to revolve around the mind. How do we know she’s not giving us false images?”

“Emma wouldn’t do that!” I defended her before I knew what I was doing. “Emma isn’t like whoever is behind all of this! She wouldn’t hurt a fly!”

“The point is that she’s messing with our heads!” Caleb countered. “Don’t trust her, Luna.”

“Haven’t you heard the saying that everything happens for a reason?” I pleaded, not knowing why but wanting his approval. “We’re here for a reason, Caleb! Emma knows this, and goes out of her way to come here to let us see our families again…! Emma came to us for a reason, Caleb, and—”
