Chapter 10
As I arrived at my locker I saw a figure nonchalantly leaning against my locker, and my heart leapt, thinking it was Nate. But then I looked again, and it was Cole. That player named Cole, whom was a part of the whole bedroom incident. He was one of Nate’s close friends. Now that I think about it, he was just in French class with me too, which left me pondering how he beat me to my locker.
“So?” He ran a hand through his hair, flashing me a bright-white smile.
I looked at him dumbly, “What are you talking about?”
His eyebrows furrowed in confusion, “My note.”
Oh, so he was the one that threw the paper airplane.
“A very angry friend of yours threw it across the classroom, how did nobody see that?” I muttered the last part to myself, but of course, he heard.
He started laughing, and I shouldered him away from my locker so I could open it.
I was on the second number of my combination when Cole grabbed ahold of my forearm, and a familiar dizzy spell had my head spinning.
No! Not now, this isn’t the time or place for this…………
I froze, eyes wide open, and stared ahead.
(In the Vision)
“Well congrrrraaaaagggguuuuulllllllaaaaaatttttiiiiiiiiooooonnnsss! You just won the lottery my friend!” A sarcastic voice breached the silence.
“Ha! Wasn’t that hard to guess, now really, who is she? Is she hot?” Cole’s voice pierced through the black.
“You’ve already met her, and you already know who I’m talking about, now stay away from her.”
“Come on, Nate? Are you really ready to settle down? Besides, I don’t understand why you haven’t done anything yet! Besides, every guy in the pack is thinking, no wait, going to set up another game. You know we haven’t had one in a very long time. So, can you guess who the target is?”
There was silence, a building anger seeming to rise.
“They. Won’t. Touch. Her.” Venom oozing from Nate’s every word.
“Sorry dude, no can do… Hey watch it!” A loud bang sounded.
“Tell the guys that she’s off limits.” Nate ordered, letting out an inhumane snarl.
“Geeze Nate!” Cole’s voice was starting to falter, “Calm down! The game starts in less than 2 minutes! You need to call it off now, because you can’t call it off when the game is in motion, that’s the rule.”
“That’s not enough time!” Nate roared, followed by another crash.
“Ugh, um, ok.” Cole stuttered, “Settle down… Well, you can enter this time! Yeah, if you win the game then there would have been no harm done! Haha, yeah! Um, then the game would have worked in your favor!” Cole’s voice wavered near the end.
Eerie silence.
“If I don’t win…” Nate’s voice was dangerously soft, “You’re dead.”
(End of Vision)
I jolted back to reality, surrounded by the sounds of a mob of people talking over each other and voicing concerns. They repeated, ‘is she ok’, ‘what happened’, ‘is she hurt’, ‘is she unconscious’, and other empty questions.
I was on the floor, and I sat up, wondering how I ended up here. I shook away the remnants of my latest vision when I noticed the fight going on nearby. My eyes grew wider than the moon as I scrambled up from my position on the floor. I stumbled a little, still adjusting, as I tried to reach them.
“Nate, Cole stop!” I pleaded, wincing as Nate punched Cole straight in the face.
Nate grabbed Cole by the shirt and pinned him to the lockers, a fire blazing in his eyes.
“What did you do to her!?” He demanded, “What made you think you had the right to—”
I gently laid a hand on his arm, and his head snapped towards me.
And then the fight left his eyes. The anger draining away, and reason coming back. His tense stature relaxed, and it felt like he melted as he looked into my eyes. As he grew calmer, I couldn’t fathom how I could have such an effect on him. But I won’t complain, their fight wasn’t even worth it.
He looked back at Cole before releasing him, “Stay away from her.”
Nate gently led me away from the scene, all traces of the murderous beast he had been before had vanished.
A game… A game? What kind of game? I milled it over in my mind, it was “one we hadn’t had in a while”, what game would that be? Wait, why am I worrying over this? That was Cole’s future, not mine! I let out a sigh, trying to drop the subject, but failing. What kind of game? Was the game about Christina? It seemed Nate cared about the so-called ‘next target’. So one, the targets a girl, and two, Nate cares about her. I couldn’t help feeling jealous at the thought.
If it was Christina, I wouldn’t care. I mean, she was his sister. But if it was another girl, I can’t help but turn green with envy. I’ve never exactly had a full conversation with the guy, though! I mean, seriously, he has been avoiding me almost! He could have snatched up a girlfriend by now! Then what about me!? I whined, Maybe I want to be his girlfriend!
I didn’t even blanche when I thought it, because I realized it was the truth. I couldn’t help peaking at him through the corner of my eyes, and tried to withhold a sigh.
Maybe I want to be the one! Maybe I want him to talk to me! Maybe I want to go on a date with him! Maybe I want to be the one he thinks about every second of every day! Maybe I want to be the only one to kiss him! Maybe I want to be his special someone! Maybe I love him! Maybe I want him to love me!
Maybe it doesn’t seem possible, and maybe he loves someone else…
I don’t know what game you’re going to play, but I sure as hell know mine! I may have to play with your heart Nate, but it’s a small price to pay. It seems you do have feelings for me, and I may have feelings for you. But, that insane voice in my mind seems to know what I am, and even though I do have feelings for you… it seems you don’t want to go down that path with me. I don’t know how I’ll do it, but I need to make my way into your heart, just until I get the information from that voice in my head. It seems like I am insane! But that voice doesn’t belong to me, even if it sounds like it!
To end this little speech of mine, I almost rolled my eyes, but kept myself in check seeing he was right beside me, Even if you do like someone else, Nate, I’ll get what I want.
But what I want may be you.
