Chapter 24

Ding-Dong!

What the heck!? It’s four in the morning!

Ding-Ding-Ding-Ding-Dong!

“Coming!” I shouted, and then winced when I realized that Jason was sleeping.

I had been pretty angry at Jason for distracting me. Mom had slipped away while my attention had been elsewhere, and I have been waiting in the living room ever since. Of course, I put Jason to bed at the usual time, but if Jason woke up, there was very little chance that he will go back to sleep.

I was always a night person, and totally opposite of Jason, who was a day person. I wasn’t even tired right now! I was kept awake both by sheer impulse and the worry I had for my mother.

Sometimes, I felt like I didn’t need to sleep. However weird that sounds. Sometimes, I never did sleep at all. I would go out on my balcony and watch the moon as it rose and fell in the sky instead. I haven’t done that since I was in Georgia, though... I don’t know why that is, but it has been good to catch up on my sleep.

Ding-Dong!

I opened the door, and my eyes bugged out of my head when the smell of some alcoholic beverage wafted in my direction.

There she was, barely standing, on the front porch.

“Hi sweet tea!” My mom’s speech slurred, “Momma came to get some shut-eye!” She stumbled forward, crashing into me as she went through the door. “Selene?” Her head struggled to stay up, rolling from right to left. “Where’s Endymion?” Then her eyes widened, “You didn’t get rid of hiiim, diiiiid you?” She slurred.

“Um, Mom?” I tried to steady her as she swayed, “My name is Luna.”

“SILLY!” She hiccupped, “Sh! Don’t be such a girl!”

“What?” I studied her, never before had I seen her this drunk. “Ok, why don’t we get you to bed—”

“NO!” She giggled, slapping my hands away when I reached for her. “Selene!”

“Luna.” I muttered, getting irritated when she drunkenly staggered into our living room.

“Don’t you have a job to do?” She fell onto a couch.

“You wouldn’t let me get a job.” I rolled my eyes, “You say that we have enough money as it is, and that I inherited more than enough money from dad to get me through college.”

“College?” She giggled, “What’s that?”

I sighed, “Mom, you’re drunk. Why don’t we go to your room and—”

“You’ll have to catch me first!” She belted out, but stayed on the couch instead of running away.

“Um…” I awkwardly stood there, “I caught you?” I touched her arm like we were playing tag. I then grasped her arm and tried to pull her off the couch.

“Selene! Where’s your brrrrrother?” She seemed unfazed by my tugging, “He needs to get the sun out! It’s too dark out there!”

I almost growled with frustration, “It’s nighttime mom!”

“OH!” She had a dopey smile on her face, “So it’s your shift! Put the moon down! Have your sister start the day!”

“Mom!” I felt the urge to slap her until she was sober, which was pretty violent for me. “She’s gone. Get up. It’s late.”
