Chapter 9

“That’s it! We need to talk!” Christina’s blue eyes were narrowed in a feral way, and she dragged me by the wrist to a more secluded place.

I thanked the principal for nothing, and let myself be dragged.

I couldn’t believe Natalie was going to get away with this. I sniffed with contempt. She effortlessly vandalized my locker, and hurt me with as much ease. “I’m sorry, but there is no evidence that she is responsible” is what the principal said… Oh, why am I so incapable as to make her pay for this?

I almost flushed as I saw Christina’s destination.

The Janitor’s closet. AKA, the location of a very hot make-out session that was two days ago.

The third day of school, what was supposed to be a beautiful Friday, and my life had taken a turn for the worst.

Day 1, foolishly making an enemy and then practically molested Nate in a closet.

Day 2, Got my locker vandalized by none other than Natalie.

Now Day 3, I confront the principal about it only to be told there was nothing they could do.

This is just F-ing great… I gave a frustrated sigh as Christina let go of me and locked the Janitor closet’s door when we got inside.

She flipped the switch, and a light flickered up from above before illuminating the entire room.

“I didn’t know what you meant that first day at the mall.” Christina chose to begin with, “But now, I think I might.”

I froze, looking at her with my Jade eyes wide open.

“That has nothing to do with Natalie!” I stuttered.

“Really?” Christina sighed, “Of course that’s what you thought I wanted to talk about… I need to work on my body language.” She gave a shaky laugh, and I was so relieved… until… “There is something weird about you.”

“What?” I tried to avoid a direct answer. “Excuse me Christina, but I am my own person. Not everyone is the same. We are all unique in our own way! I am who I am!”

“See!” She pointed a finger accusingly at me, “Right there! You’re hiding something from me!”

I tensed, “Maybe. But then again, I may not.”

“All summer, I’ve seen it in your eyes! Just like right now! You don’t trust us!” Christina put a hand to her heart in an offended gesture.

“NO!” I cried out in shock, reaching for her and shaking my head. “No! Christina, you’ve got it all wrong! I—”

She raised a hand to me in a gesture of silence, “You were so quiet, so shy and unsure. You would have locked yourself away from society. You never actually tried to make friends!” She looked at me sadly, “You’re keeping secrets from me! I’ve tried to make you feel safe, I’ve stood by you and I thought that you would have learned to trust in me…” She closed her eyes, her voice now barely a whisper, “Something has hurt you Luna, and I may never be able to help until you tell me. Why do you push people away? You. Are. Afraid. You won’t let anybody close to you. Why can’t you see I’m trying to help?”

“Christina!” I put my hands on her shoulders and looked her straight in the eye, “I don’t do this of my own free will…” I searched her eyes, trying to see if she would understand. “I do it because it keeps me and my family safe. I would tell you if I could, but you would never understand. You are the only one in my entire life that took the time to talk to me, to smile at me, to take the time to get to know me, and above all be the first one to befriend me…” I gave her a little half-smile, willing her to understand, “And the only secret I will ever keep from you is this one. The one that can never, ever, not in a google-plex ever, be told.” I hugged her, “You are the only friend I have ever had, and one I’ve vowed not to lose.”
