Getting sandwiched in between my best friend and the boy who I have a more confusing dynamic with than trigonometry is not how I pictured spending one of my lasts school nights.

My social battery is running at a tight forty-two percent, which for me is decently high, and I have a feeling this is going to be a long, long, night.

I grab my phone off of my lap and read the time,

10:37.

Great.

Ford, Caden, and Nate piled up in the front seat as they argue over god knows what while Soph's music blasts, as usual.

The bar is only about a fifteen minute drive, so I spend most of those fifteen minutes asking myself why I didn't just stay home.

Kai is extremely quiet, and even when we exchange an awakened look or two, he remains non speaking.

Fidgeting with my phone case, I feel my phone buzz and immediately check to see what the notification is because at this point, any action or communication with somebody is valid enough.

doing okay? I read from Jack. My body instantly relaxes and as I reply I ask myself why I didn't text him during the beginning of the drive.

mm, surely i've had better moments in my life i could recall than this one.

i will pick you up the exact second you ask me to, Doll.

thank you, Jack. Reading his words, I start to feel a little better. I can make the best of my time at this event, and if the group isn't ready to leave when I am. I have Jack.

He's always here.

tell me you'll text me when you want to leave. tell me, pretty girl.

i will text you when i want to leave. I assert. A soft smile pulls at my lips in regards to the pure safety I feel not only physically being with Jack, but even through text, I feel invincible.

that's my girl :) I read, as I feel Kai's eyes lingering over my shoulder.

I turn my head and find him looking at me, not my phone. "Hey." I lean in whispering, there's no point in trying to yell over the guys bickering, the blaring music, or Soph's whole concert she's throwing next to me as, Cruel Summer by Taylor Swift, tempts to blow out the speakers.

"Hi, Aug." Kai smiles bringing a hand to my kneecap. I let him this time. Testing how my body reacts to his touch and if maybe easing into the conversation is the only way I can get Kai to talk to me for longer than a couple minutes.

"You excited?" He asks nudging my shoulder with his. A lot of people will be here tonight and as much as the crowd scares me, the second I get a few drinks in I'll be perfectly fine.

"Stoked. Stick with me tonight?" I reply sinking into the way his skin feels against mine. His hand travels up from my knee now to my thigh. Slowly caressing the area without leaving a single inch untouched.

"Mm, I should be the one to tell you that, Aug. Seems to me, you're, the one to always run off." Kai tsks. I giggle at his statement because it's somewhat true.

"Won't happen tonight, Statler." I assure.

"Counting on it, Renna."
