Note- This story connects to my other series and Levesque/Law/Anderson characters will be featured. For those that were a fan of Brandon & Jamie, you'll be seeing plenty of them in this book!
Harlow Law
"Harlow!"
I woke up out of my sleep to hear my dad yelling my name.
"What?!" I wined, hearing my dad call my name for the 3rd time.
Another day of school, how exciting. As soon as I put the cover back a saw over my head and there was soon a knock on my door.
"Harlow, come on, baby girl. I need you up and getting ready for school. I have a meeting this morning."
Why my dad still worked even after being a retired NBA player is beyond me. He said he can't just sit home all day, but shit, I could.
How rude of me, allow me to introduce myself. My name is Harlow Law, 14, and I'm in my freshman year of high school and We're a month into the school year and it's my favorite season, fall. I'll be 15 in November and my dad and I have a trip planned, just the two of us.
I have a lot of friends, but I'm closest to my cousin, Luna Law. She's just turned 16 over the Summer and she's a Junior. Her dad, Logan Law, and my dad Liam Law are cousins, but cousins in this family are raised more like siblings. So while Logan is my cousin as well, he's always been Uncle Logan to me and his sisters are Aunt Livy and Aunt Mickey.
My mom, Dana Law, was my favorite person. With dad on the road for basketball, we spent all our time together. Dad played for the San Antonio Spurs so I'm a Texas girl, born and raised. My mom is from Dallas and my dad from Houston. They met as freshman at Duke University and became inseparable.
My dad was drafted his Junior year of college to the Spurs. He still got his degree a few years later. He always said that he was too close to finishing. My mom moved to San Antonio the year after she graduated and had me at 24. By 28 she was diagnosed with cervical cancer. It was early stages and within a year she went into remission and was cancer free. Unfortunately, it came back aggressively when she turned 31 and she fought like hell.
The chemo seemed to be working just like it did the first time. Dad did everything he could from pulling in the best doctors, hoping something would save her. Uncle Tyler being a doctor had a lot of connections and made calls in hopes of helping my mom.
Just when we thought she was going into remission once again, we got the news it had spread and there was nothing that could be done, but make her comfortable. Imagine hearing that news at 8 years old.
Mom fought for another year before she passed. I was 9. Losing her to cancer shattered my world. She had just turned 33. Everything was just so sad. I was homeschooled for the rest of that year. I was in therapy coping with her death.
Dad was ready to retire right in that moment. It was just the two of us. He took a month off, but then finished out the season. Crazy enough, the Spurs won the NBA championship that year and dad was MVP. He dedicated the win to mommy.
After that season, dad retired. He had been in the league for 13 years at that point and said nothing else mattered, but me. We moved back to Houston and I spent my time between home, my grandparents, or Uncle Logan's. There was so much family here. So many cousins. Houston was home.
There was another hard knock on my door.
"Harlow!"
I could hear the change in my dad's tone of voice. That was a warning tone that I was testing his patience. I mean, it's not like he was going to do anything. Dad was a a major softy. I got to decide what I wanted to do, wear, whatever. He didn't mind. My cousins and friends couldn't understand how he was so cool. I guess I got lucky.
