After Delano told me about the mouse, which was a size of a quarter, I successfully caught it. I place it into a bowl, grab my wallet and walk out my apartment, a couple blocks to let it free. I don't believe in killing any type of rodents or animals. They don't know what their doing, they're just trying to survive like the rest of us. Once I found a park nearby, I set the bowl down and watch the mouse scurry away, ending up in a pile of trash. I left the bowl and started walking back home. As i'm walking, I see my close friend Malani at a food truck.
"LANI!"
She doesn't look up and continues looking at her phone, her music probably blasting in her ear. I proceed to cross the street but didn't look both ways as a car breaks , only a few feet from me.
"WATCH WHERE YA GOING!"
the driver flips me off and honks the horn. I return the gesture but give him two instead and laugh to myself. I get to the other side of the street and see Malani giving me a shocked face.
"what the hell are you doing? you could've gotten killed"
I rolled my eyes.
"well maybe if you heard me when I called your name and didn't have your airpods blasting, I wouldn't have to worry about getting killed"
we both look at each other, smile and instantly hug one another.
"what are you doing out here anyways?" I ask her while texting Delano to see if he's hungry.
"just getting some food and then i'm off to my class"
I met Malani after I graduated college. When me and Delano were moving into our apartment in Brooklyn. She is 22 years old and originally from brooklyn. her parents weren't in her life , resulting in her getting put in a group home. once she turned 18, she left the group home and tried to figure out this thing you call life. She curiously watched us from her window in the building and decided to come down and introduce herself. She explained that many people don't move into these building because it's expensive and it doesn't give a feel of living in the city. I argued that and said that the neighborhood was quiet but it still had the city surrounding them. We bickered back and forth for two weeks and ended up being best friends because of it. She is a little younger than Delano and I and she never really had any plans for her life. She's been trying different colleges and trade schools but nothing seemed to stick to her. she's like a paper flowing through the wind, trying to find its purpose.
I read the text saying that Delano wasn't hungry and wanted me to come back home to show me something. I look up at Malani and seen she already had her food in her hand. I found some change and gave the guy the money and took a poland spring water from the front of the truck. I turn back to Malani and open the water, taking a few sips.
"What class are you getting into this time?"
"I found a dance class on Groupon and wanted to try it out. it's hip hop and you get to pick the song. you should come, it doesn't start for another hour"
I swallow the water and put the cap back on. "I really wish I could but Delano needs me" I wonder what was wrong and why he needed me. She made a pouty face and batted her eyelashes like a child.
"what does lil lano need now?" I playfully push her and smile.
"Shut up and stop calling him that" She laughed and shrugged her shoulders.
"We'll, if you're free later, we can smoke and grab some food"
"I have work but I get off at 10 and I know you'll be awake because you're a pothead and you don't know what sleep is so i'll come over after"
