Chaper 13

Rory had been in Rheynold's office for a fair few hours, then snuck out for business. What do they do exactly? Rory told me that they help the mistreated, but it only seems to be me here. Maybe the vampires help the maids out of tricky situations on the other side. I don't know. It was Wednesday. I'd spend the last hour pacing the corridors of the mansion out of boredom. I wandered into Rory's room to fimd it had been unslept in. I walked slowly to my room, remembering a desk and notebook stood in the very corner. I opened the door to find another maid, small in stature standing next to my bed. She had just made it, fluffing the pillows. I knocked on the wooden door, fearing of alarming her if I just spoke to her directly. She turned to me and bowed her head. She had mousy brown hair, tied neatly in a bun with a small ribbon. She also wore a Victorian style, black dress, like the other maids, with buttons all the way down the front. She also wore the white apron around her waist, clean and tidy.

"I've just finished cleaning your room my Lady," she spoke delicately.

"How many rooms do you have left to do?" I inquired.

"Eight," she replied quietly.

"You do them all yourself?" I asked in shock.

"Yes," she muttered, "I must continue otherwise I'll be in trouble". I pondered for a moment.

"I'll help you," I informed her. Her eyes were wide with shock.

"It's not necessary," she began.

"I know, but I want to. I need something to do, and I want to talk to you," I explained.

"To me?" she asked. A look of horror enveloped her face. She had frozen in fear.

"It's okay," I assured her as I rubbed her arm,"You're not in trouble". She nodded timidly and led me to the next room. I helped her make the bed as I questioned her.

"How did you get here?" I asked.

"Brought here by one of the vampires," she responded.

"Why are you a maid?" I asked further.

"My service as payback for saving me," she explained.

"Any idea why I am not forced into this labour?" I inquired.

"Rory obviously sees something in you," she told me. An awkward silence filled the room as she dusted over the study desk.

"How do they treat you?" I asked. Ginny wasn't taken with the level of respect they give the maids when I spoke to her earlier.

"I'm not so sure if I should say," she mumbled.

"If I ask a question I want the answer. As a Lady of the house I want to know. Do they threaten you to keep quiet?" I sternly asked her.

"Yes, they hit us, punish us and stuff," she responded meekly.

"Can I see?" I asked. She had bruises over her arm.

"They all think little of you don't they?" I began, "Where are all the servants now".

"Since it's lunch they'll be on lunch break in the Servant's Quarters," she informed me.

"Take me there," I requested.

After a long walk to the quarters and evading the eyes of the other vampires I walked down the cold cellar steps into the servant's quarters. Faint voices could be heard as we approached an open doorframe. Gasps could be heard as I came into view. Many of them stood and addressed me with a bow.

"Sit down ladies," I instructed them, "Okay, to clear this up none of you are in trouble". Sighs of relief filled the room. I sat down on the nearest bed.

"I just want to know a bit about you guys," I started. There were about 10 maids in the room, one of which was Ginny whom I recognised from this morning.

"Did you all come here because the vampires brought you here?" I asked.

Ginny spoke up, "We did yes".

"And you are all treated badly?" I asked in disgust. Awkward silence filled the room.

"I'll take that as a yes," I concluded. They all looked at their feet.

"I want you all to know that if you need to talk to anyone about anything, come to me, okay?" I asked.

"Okay," many of the maids said meekly. Silence filled the room once more. Shouting could be heard in the background.

"Veronica!" the voice shouted. Footsteps echoed louder and I stood up. My eyes lay on Rory's. He was back. He took one look at the maids in disgust.

"What are you doing down here?" he asked. I hated him when he was this mad. He was just unsociable.

"We'll talk upstairs," I said as I pushed past him and up the stairs. I walked as briskly as I could towards the living quarters. If the vampires treated the maids the way they do, what would he do to me? He may have kissed me, but I'm just as human as they are, and it seems I've pushed my luck. I made it to the living quarters on time as Rory caught up with me. I sat back down on the sofa and avoided conversation with everybody. At half two many of the maids piled into the kitchen to prepare lunch. The awkward silence that had occured among all the vampires for the past hour had gotten to me. So what if I wanted to spend time with the maids, do something for myself for a change? I stood up and took one glance in Rory's direction, to which a peircing stare was returned to me. I rolled my eyes and walked down the corridor, rage building up inside me until I reached the kitchen. I walked in and all the maids saw me in a rage.

"Are you okay my Lady?" Ginny asked timidly.

"I think I'm in trouble with Rory," I responded harshly.

"Can we help?" she asked me, less afraid than before. I sighed, exhaling my anger.

"Let me help in the kitchen," I responded kindly. It wasn't their fault Rory was mad at me, he just doesn't understand. She passed me an apron.

"Want to chop some vegetables?" she asked. I obliged and helped prepare the birthday feast.
