Chapter 14

I felt sorry for Rory. With minutes to spare before dinner I left the maids in the kitchen and warned the others that dinner would be ready. Rheynold was waiting in the dining room when I joined him and Will. We stood in silence as the others filed into the dining room, each wishing Will a happy birthday. I'd already wished him a happy birthday four times today. He didn't receive any presents though, just got the day off work. He was a mechanic, maintaining the house. We also had a special wine to compliment the dinner. Being sixteen I avoided it entirely. I definately made the effort to be social tonight. I spoke to Will a lot, us sitting together had become a habit. Rory also sat next to me, not saying a word. Rheynold sensed the atmosphere between us.

"Master Rory, whatever on earth is the matter?" he asked concerned.

"I'm just trying to comtemplate why Ronnie chooses to spend her time with our servants when I am absent," he replied. He was cross. I looked at Will, who looked down all of a sudden. What had they talked about yesterday? Rory continued to eat without looking at anyone. I put my knife and fork down delicately making as little noise as possible. Everybody was looking at me, but little did I care.

"Is this true Ronnie?" Rheynold asked.

"It is," I responded confidently, "I personally think the reasons why are obvious".

"These reasons being?" Rory interupted.

"Because I have been waited on hand and foot for the past 3 years Rory, I was dependant on people with no choice". I felt tears prickle in my eyes. "Now I'm no longer ill and I have a choice, so I want to do something as a way of paying the world back for looking after me. I was bored in that ward, with only one nurse to talk to and I had to stay in the same bed year in, year out. I could have died, Rory. I'm making the most of my life, and sitting on my backside doesn't cut it". Everybody was sat in shock, including myself. I had never admitted that before. "Plus the female company is refreshing," i added. Everybody sat in silence finishing their dinner.

"So what's the problem Master Rory?" Rheynold asked once we had all finished.

"She wants to spend her time with low-life scum instead of us," he responded in disgust.

"Rory," I began. I had become angry again. "They are not low life scum. What makes you think that?"

"BECAUSE THEY'RE HUMAN!" he bellowed. Tears really began to flood down my face.

"They're as human as me!" I argued back.

"I can't be doing with this!" Rory exclaimed. He lept out of his chair and left the room in a hurry. I turned to Will, who couldn't help but look into his lap. I put my hand on his shoulder.

"I am so sorry," I told him. I stood up myself and left for the kitchen, running to hide my fresh tears. I burst through the door, then figures became a blur through tears. i must have sat there for twenty minutes before I stopped crying. I recited the whole conversation to the maids, who comforted me. I began to help out when Will entered.

"Veronica," Ginny called me. I turned to see Will. I dried my hands and walked up to him.

"I'm sorry," I told him again, bursting into tears again. He hugged me with his arms wrapped around me tightly. He smelt different to Rory, which at the moment was far more comforting.

"Don't be, he's stressed. He shouldn't have said what he did though, there's no excuse," Will assured me. He pulled away and cradled my face in his hands.
