Chapter three

Twelve at midnight. I can't sleep. I've been sleeping all day and night for two days since my last practice. My night gown is flowy but still it's hard to beat the summer heat. Drenched in sweat and feeling like dirt, I finally decide to get off the bed.

Walking down the halls at 'night' is almost impossible to do. With guards at the foot of every door and blinding light at midnight just makes it such a task. But I like to do it anyway.
I take shortcuts, walking straight and then cutting left right before Edwards and Shoveri can see me.

I fill up the enormous, golden tub with cold water, soap and lavender. I sink my feet into the soapy puddle and fully step into the tub. I immerse myself in the cold water that has already become lukewarm. My wet, long hair tangled all over my face.

After the refreshing bath, I get out of the tub and change. Today's choice is a strapless, wispy, duck egg blue dress. When light hits the edges, it displays the colours of the rainbow. I just need to get to the library and I'll be fine.

The library has four storeys, each connected by several sets of spiral stairs. The air mostly smells like dust but now I catch a hint of musk. Lucian.

"You're awake as well, Luci?" I ask into the nothingness of the library.

Silence. "Luce??" No answer.

I keep my silence as I climb the stairs to the poetry section. Some Leevekitz at night really calms me down.

"Looking for this?" Her voice is deep and almost growly. I spot Reina in the shadows of the shelves, handing out what looks like one of Leevekitz's books.

"Yeah. Thanks." I take it from her extended hand as my mind races, why is she here at this hour?
Not one of our workers leave their stations at random times. They fear my father. They fear death.

"Confused?" She asks me while holding an unsettling smile.

"Yeah. Aren't you supposed to treat the soldiers? Also have you see Lucia-"

Tears sting my eyes, fire burns through my nose. I see Reina's figure, holding an opened bottle of what may be some kind of poison. My words slur as I ask for Lucian. Father. Mother. Darkness. Total darkness.

hoot hoot hoot

Is that an owl? No way. Thestronia DO NOT accommodate owls. My mouth is dry and parched and I'm famished. I can taste bitter in my mouth. I open my eyes and see.... Darkness. Everywhere. And I saw something very strange. The moon.
