THREE MONTHS LATER

Adria tapped her foot irritatedly at the dean's office. How did I get here? I befriended another mutant, that's how. Dumb idea. She chastised herself.

She immediately felt bad—it wasn't Carmen's fault.

Turns out that not one, but both of Adria's new friends were mutants.

I guess most mutants were written off as "delinquents" and sent to boarding school by their parents, go figure, she thought. She was still very hurt by the fact that Charles decided to send her off, but she couldn't protest as she knew that her behavior hadn't been.. ideal. And here she was, causing them even more trouble.

"Look, ma'am, please," she pleaded, "you don't have to call home. It wasn't even my fault!"

"We take physical violence very seriously here, Miss Lehnsherr," she deadpanned.

"Oh, but you're fine with your students making comments about people's home life?!" Adria suppressed the urge to roll her eyes.

"There is no evidence of Miss Stacy saying anything of the sort to Miss Moore," she argued.

"What other reason would I have to punch her then?!"

"Well, I'm sure there was something. You teenage girls always seem to be upset at each other for some petty reason or another."

Adria sighed in frustration. She knew she would get nowhere with this. Evelyn Stacy's father had this school wrapped around his finger. That was why the girl picked fights with anyone and everyone who breathed her way—she knew that she would be absolved of anything she did here.

Adria's heart sank as the dean began dialing Charles' landline.

Adria was staring listlessly at the wall right outside the dean's office when she heard the door shut. She turned to see Charles looking down at her.

"Would you like to explain to me what happened?" he said, pursing his lips. She couldn't read his expression—he just looked tired. Guilt gnawed at her heart.

"I'm sorry," she said, sincerity lacing her voice.

"Well?" he prodded her on, "What happened?"

"I'm sure the dean already told you," Adria said, averting her eyes to the floor.

"Yes, but I want to hear your side of the story."

"The girl—Evelyn—who's a real bitch, by the way, was making uncalled-for comments about my friend's mother." she shrugged. "And I was just really sick of her doing the worst things to people without any consequences."

Friend?  Charles wondered.

"You did the right thing, sticking up for your friend like that," he placed a comforting hand on her shoulder, his face softening. "And even if you were in the wrong—which you aren't—this is still not something to warrant expulsion. Students get suspended for such incidents—not expelled. I tried convincing the dean of that but she wouldn't budge."

"Yeah, that's probably cause of Evelyn's dad," Adria rolled her eyes. "I'm guessing Evelyn told him to make the dean get rid of me. He's a huge investor in the school or something."

"Sounds like a prick."

Adria smirked.

"Do you need any help packing your things?" Charles asked as they walked through the school halls.

"No, I'm okay," Adria shrugged.

"Alright, then, I'll be waiting for you in the car."

As Adria reached the stairs she was met with Carmen and Keith, who were waiting for her at the bottom of the stairwell. Her heart warmed at the sight of them. She found out a few weeks after she first met them that they were mutants, which made the three of them infinitely closer. While Carmen's mutant ability was that she could control various types of plants, Keith had the ability to manipulate light. He was also a huge pain in the ass. But, he was actually starting to grow on her.

"So?" Keith asked in anticipation, "What'd the dean say?"

Adria sighed, "I'm expelled."

"What?!" Carmen shot up. "No, that can't be right, you were just defending me! I'm going to talk to her."

"Carmen, nothing you say will change her mind."

"I don't care," she stormed off to the dean's office.

"This is too extreme, why would she expel you?" Keith frowned.

Adria gave him a look.

"Stacy's dad," he realized.

She sighed, "Come on, I gotta go pack my stuff."

Keith waiting outside Adria's door as she packed—the school had strict rules about students of the opposite gender being in their rooms. Adria struggled to hold the door open as she tried to carry her suitcase, duffel bag, and backpack out of her and Carmen's room.

"What—" Keith moved over to hold the door open for her. "Who the hell carries this many bags?!"

"Shut up," she grumbled.

Keith suppressed a smile, rolling his eyes as he went to help carry her bags down the stairs.

As they reached the last step and Keith was able to put her suitcase down, Carmen came rushing to them. She had a hopeless look on her face.

"She wouldn't listen!" she exclaimed

"I told you, she won't change her mind," Adria told her.

"Aw, Adria, are you leaving?" Evelyn Stacy pouted, walking towards the group.

Adria ignored her.

"You know," she continued, smirking, "when you first got here, I always thought your name sounded familiar. And I realized today that you've got the same as that guy who killed the president."

"Just ignore her," Carmen whispered.

Adria turned to leave.

"I mean.. it would make sense," Evelyn egged her on, "I guess violence runs in the family."

Adria balled her fists tightly, boiling with rage.

"Shut up," she said through gritted teeth.

"What? I didn't quite hear that."

"Enough, Evelyn," Keith interjected.

"Shut. Up."

"Aww what're you gonna do, Adria, call Daddy on me?"

Adria took a deep breath in an attempt to calm herself. She plastered a smile on her face as she turned back to face Evelyn.

"You couldn't have picked a better time to do this," she said sweetly, walking towards her. "Cause now.. I won't get in trouble for this."

Adria's fists met with Evelyn's already bruised nose for the second time that day. This time, blood gushed down her face. Her hand instinctively went up to her bleeding nose, staring at Adria in shock with tearful eyes.

Adria simply flipped her off as she exited the building. Keith and Carmen followed after her—the former with a blinding grin on his face, and the latter wide-eyed in shock.
