When Billy had arrived at Marlowes house, Steves car was there. Billy didn't want anything to do with him or even be around him. But the coat needed to go back. So Billy sucked it up like he always does. Heads for the door.
When Billy knocked on the door. El answered. "Can I help you?"
"Yeah, uh I was just returning this back." Hold out the coat for her to grab.
Marlowe was on the other side of the door. "California?" Tapping for El to move. "Could you please put that back in my room in my bed?" El nods.
"Seems like you have a full house."
Marlow escoffed. "Well, Hopper is out of town so I have to watch the little one. Steve went to go pick her up for me. Since my car broke down."
Billy looked at Marlows car. "When did that happened?"
"This morning. The car is older than me to be honest. The engine is dead." Crossing her arms against her chest. "Thank you for bringing my coat back."
Snapping his head back to face Marlow. "You're welcome. Hey did you know that there is a photo in the pocket?" Marlow shook her head no. "Yeah I'd be careful." Giving her a wink.
Steve comes to the door. "Alright I have to go before Danni has a cow of me not coming home." Putting his coat on. "Hargrove." Not bothering looking at Billy.
"Harrington." Of course Steve has to ruin the moment for him. "So next time." Looking at Marlowe. "I'd be careful."
Steve looked at Marlowe who was nodding. "Everything alright?"
"Yeah. My dad left a photo in his coat pocket. I left that coat in Billy's car." Marlow smiled at Steve. "Thanks again for picking her up."
Steve walked to the front door. "No problem. Just let me know when it's time to pick her up."
"No worries, Hopper is coming to get her. It's one done deal, I hope." Marlowe smiled. Hopping that Billy and Steve wouldn't fight at her house. Because Marlowe will kick both of their asses.
Moving past Billy. "Sure." Going to his car.
Billy moved so Steve could leave the house. As Steve was leaving Billy asked. "What happened to your car?"
Marlowe sighed as she looked at her car. "Well, she broke down for the last time. The engine gave out. I think." Again sighing in agony. "What a girl going to do? I'm not shelling money out, something else can break again."
"How old is the car?" Billy also looked at the car.
"Older then the both of of us." It was a 1940s station wagon. A family one.
Billy wanted to laugh. Couldn't bring himself to do it. "She's yours? Or is it a he?" Teasing Marlowe a bit.
"Oh ha ha. Yes she's mine.." Then whatever was in Marlowe mind went away.
"Do you want to sell her?"
"Can't. It belonged to my mother. I promised that I would keep it for her." Even if she never would remember Marlowe or anyone.
Billy understood. Wanting to keep something of their parents that is no longer in their anymore. "How much for the part did they say?"
"More than your and mine combined college fund." Making Marlowe missing her mom. "Its alright. She can sit right out there."
"Really? What a shame."
Agreeing with that. "I know. But no one wants to see this old gal anymore. So she'd be safer at home more than at school."
"Plan on buying a new car?"
"I wouldn't know how to buy on or what to do. My uncles are busy, Steve is working or dating." Looking behind her. "Do you want to come in. Or do you have to get going?"
"Uh. I have to get going. Thanks for the gift. You know you make my addiction stronger right by buying them for me right?"
Marlowe nods. "I do. But hey, granny has a gift for you as well. So you better come back soon."
"Why?"
"Because she gets all her employers something small. Anyways, thanks again as well for bringing the coat back."
"You're welcome. See ya later Mars." Taking a small step backwards.
"Bye California."
Turning the car on Billy drives back home. Feeling like he is letting Marlowe into his life, it want a good idea. Billy didn't want to let anyone in. He couldn't! Marlowe wouldn't understand what he has to do.
Thinking of an idea for Marlowe, that Billy would buy some magazines for cars that Marlowe could take a look at. Billy would help her as much as he could but then he would kick her out. Not in mean way. But in a way that she wouldn't have to be involved in his life.
Marlowe went back into the house after watching Billy driving away. El was up in Marlowes room playing with her hair. Opening the door to her room seeing El playing with her hair in front of the mirror.
"So that's Max's brother?" El turns around.
"Yup."
"I don't see why older woman like him. Seemed like a jerk."
El wasn't wrong. In Marlowes eyes yeah he is but something changed him. She didn't know what. "Not always." Laying on her bed. "So what would you like to do?"
"Can we watch scary movies?"
"Sure. As long if you don't tell your dad about it then I don't see why not."
"Do you like him?"
"Who?"
"Max's brother."
"California?" Scoffed as she laughed a bit. "No. He's into older women and skinny."
El laughed too. "Come on. You defend that boy so fast when Steve asked if everything was okay."
"Well it's the truth." Changing the subject. "Why don't I call Max's mom tomorrow to see if she can come over."
"See another reason to see the boy." Sitting next to Marlowe. "But I would love that Mar."
"Cause I'm the best." Winking at El. "Alright I'm sure granny has some cookies for ya down stairs." El got up so quickly.
Marlowe picked up her dad's jacket it now smells like Billy and her dad.
