School was school, Marlowe walked Tyler to his bus that he had to take for awhile. Walking to the car park, Steve was waiting for Marlowe, Billy awaits for Max and Marlowe. Billy meant it that he was going to take Marlowe home.

Max came to his car not late thankfully. She didn't want to deal with his shit today. Marlowe was a bit late cause of making sure that Tyler got on the right bus. Tossing down his smoke. "Come'on Mars let's go!"

Making Marlowe jump a bit, then seeing Steve. Steve knew that she would go with Billy to avoid a fight between himself and Billy. They waved at each other knowing that it was okay with one another.

Max got into the backseat as Marlowe sat in the front. "Took you long enough."

"I'm sorry that I care for other well beings." This wasn't going to go well.

Lighting up another cigarette. Then handing it to Marlowe. "I was kidding. Jeez girl lighten up."

Marlowe took the cigarette, she needed to stop cause if Marlowe wanted to surgery so bad that one of the requirement is to stop smoking. Marlowe didn't say anything after that, even though it made her mad.

"Now I'm going to drop off Max and then I'll take you home to look at the car." Billy stated.

"Can't I just stay? Seriously her granny doesn't care." Max was wondering why he's making a long ass drive back and forth.

Looking back at Max. "I don't think she'd mind. She might pull you away from your homework to help her make cookies for the boy scouts." Her little cousins are in the boy scouts.

"I'm down for that."

Billy hates it when Max always butts in. "Fine." Taking another turn as they headed to Granny's house.

As Billy pulled up in the drive way, Marlowe's neighbor were outside with the kids. Spanking them. It killed Marlowe seeing the kids that she cared for deeply were getting spanked with a pattle. This wasn't the 50s anymore. There was nothing that Marlowe could do other than being a shoulder to cry on.

Max was watching too as she took a step behind Billy as they all were out of his car. Granny came out of the house and got a hose to spray the mother to make her stop. This wasn't going to be the last time of her spanking them.

Billy waited for awhile after watching that. Marlowe walked back and forth outside as Billy was looking at Marlowe's car. "Why are you pastoring?"

"Because.. what happened to those poor kids wasn't right. What I did wasn't right."

Lifting the hood of the car. "What could you have done? They're not your kids."

"Yes. I'd died if no one helped only watched."

Billy sighed as he looked all over her again. "I admire that you want to help. But not everyone can be helped."

That stopped her tracks. "They're kids Billy. They might not know how to ask."

"Well I thought your granny was going to drown the mom with the hose." Billy chuckled. "That woman got balls."

Sighed as she took out a cigarette. "That she does. I want be like her when I grow up. She takes no shit from anyone and she makes sure you don't take her shit as well." Blowing at the smoke.

Billy hold out his hands as he wanted to smoke. Marlowe hands it to him. "I can see it."

"Have you ever thought about having kids when you grow up California?" Marlowe leaned on her car.

"I don't like kids. I'm okay to be around them." Sounding like a grumpy old man. Handing Marlowe back the cigarette.

Taking her cigarette back, Marlowe inhales the smoke. "Kids can be little assholes." Exhaling as she spoke.

"Ain't that the truth. So... I think I found what your problem is." Billy got down on his knees. "The bottom.... Well to make you understand." Sometimes not everyone understands cars. "The bottoms of your car has a gas leak, and it made your whole bottom rust. That's why you can't turn your wheel and etc." Billy sighed. Rubbing his forehead that had oil on his hand. Marlowe chuckled. "What?"

"You have oil on you forehead." Taking a wash cloth that granny has gave her when Billy was staying for a few hours to help with the car. Step toward Billy as she began to rub his forehead. "You might want to wash your face again before you leave."

Billy didn't really know that he wanted to be close to Marlowe. She wouldn't allow him to be in her life the way he treated girls or older woman. Even with fat girls Billy didn't like whatsoever. He thought they were gross. But this was Steve cousin, to piss off Steve. That was still his main goal. "Hey why don't we go out for dinner tonight?"

"Sorry California, I have exams in the morning."

"You'll do fine." He placed on hand on her waist.

Pushing the hand off from her waist. Marlowe took a step back. "You're right I'll do fine, fine isn't what I want."

Knowing he failed with that line. "Then what do you want." Acting like he cared.

"A passing grade. Thank you Billy for looking at my car. It does mean a lot and it also makes sense." Her hand placed on her car. "But I'm going to have to sell it for real this time. Not lying." It was many things she had to say goodbye to that her mother owned. "Hey I might get something out of it."

"Where do you think you might sell it too?"

"The junkyard." Crossing her arms front of her chest. "Thanks again."

"I'd think it be a waste to sell it."

"Billy, as sweet and right as you may be. I don't have the money, or can even make enough money to fix that. Believe me she had her days."

"I see."

Billy hates to see a car like that go. But it did give Billy an idea to be closer to her, to get his wish. "Well I can always give you a car ride if you ever need one."

"I'll keep that in mind." Her smile was a little fake.
