Vic's eyes shot up to me the moment I spoke. The bars to the cell were still closed, but there was enough light to see everything in it. I could have described Vic's temporary home, but the only thing my eyes could focus on was Vic. He looked more tired than ever, but his smile was still wide and bright when he saw me. His whole demeanor screamed run-down and stressed out, but that didn't stop him from frantically gathering himself from the floor and running up to the bars.
The both of us stood there for a moment, relief probably evident on both of our faces as we were finally able to see each other for the first time in what felt like forever. No words were spoken. For just a moment, it was only us. We were the only people who existed in the world, and I was perfectly okay with it.
"Excuse me," a gruff voice boasted from behind me. I blinked a few times, coming out of the fantasy Vic and I were in and settling back down into the real world where Vic is being accused of murdering someone and I'm pregnant with our daughter.
"Sorry," I whisper, backing away from the cell door as the guard gestures that he's about to unlock the cell. A lot of emotions run through me like wildfire, and for the first time in a week, I feel alive. I'm not a hungry, tired, and emotionally drained person. I'm here and I'm alive and the blood in my veins isn't pumping any less than it ever has.
The guard slips the keys into the door, and it seems like it takes an eternity for him to turn the lock that opens the door to my life.
Once the lock clicks, I stand as close as possible to the sliding bars, watching as each one disappears and reveals Vic. He doesn't look the best, but I'm happier than I ever thought possible.
The two of us stand there for a minute, just gathering the moment. We try our best to stay civilized, but the thought of being anywhere other than Vic's arms sends me into a frenzy. I run to him, not having to run far since he was maybe two feet away from me, and throw myself into his arms. His hands make their way around my sides, settling into the small of my back where he pushed me even further into him. My arms find their way to his neck, and I burry my head into the crook, loving the way he smells. It may not be the same as before, but it's Vic, and that's all I wanted.
"What are you doing here?" he whispers, rubbing his hands up and down my back.
"Breaking you out," I joke quietly. Vic shakes his head a little, but makes no attempt to pull back.
"No, really."
"We're here to get you out. There's been a misunderstanding," I tell him, being careful not to go to into detail.
"What? How? Everyone here is convince that I murdered someone," he replies, confusion lacing his voice.
"I told you, there was a misunderstanding. The real criminal came with us and is turning himself in for you," my voice is shaky as I speak, but I don't dare stop.
"What? That's fantastic," Vic breathes. I can tell he's more relaxed now.
"Yeah..." I trail off. I didn't want to be the one to tell him that his father was the one who put him in this position, so I didn't say anything more and just stood there with him for the rest of our little visit.
The both of us almost forgot that we weren't the only ones there until we heard someone clear their throat behind us.
"Victor, I know you're excited to see Kellin again, but we do have serious business to tend to," his mother says. She sounds sad, and I understand why. She's only saying goodbye to one person as she embraces another.
"Right," Vic replies, running a hand through his hair as he allows the guard to place the cuffs on his wrists.
Even though it's difficult, I try my best to hold Vic's hand as we walk. After not being able to touch him for so long, it only makes sense for me to want to do so now that I can.
We make it to the interview room that Vic was in when I first saw him after his arrest. He seems a little hesitant to walk in, but does so anyway. All of us sit down and wait for Lynn to walk in so we can figure this whole mess out.
"I can't believe someone else was a big enough coward to have me put in here instead of sucking it up. I've been missing out on my baby and my boyfriend because of someone else's stupidity," Vic mutters angrily, looking down to my stomach and smiling a little.
Before anyone else can speak, Lynn walks in, carrying a thick folder in one of her arms.
"Ah, hello again," she says when she sees me, a smile on her face.
"Hi," I reply, hooking an arm around Vic's.
"So, what brings you all here today?" she asks, getting straight to the point.
I sort of tense up at the question. I know that this will bring a lot of hell into our lives, and Vic may never be able to forgive his father again.
I stand up, feeling like I'm going to be sick, and empty my stomach into the garbage can placed in the corner of the room. Everyone makes a sound of disgust, but doesn't say anything to me. I almost thought Vic was going to come over and support me, but I remember that he's practically bound to the metal chair and throw the thought away.
"I'm better," I croak when I reach my chair again. One of the guards was nice enough to grab me a bottle of water while I was heaving.
"So, as I was wondering, what brings you here? I know you wanted to talk to Vic, but no-one ever notifies me when you do so, so I thought something else may be up," Lynn speaks smoothly, pushing a piece of hair behind her ear.
"Yes, we have to talk to you about something...big," Mrs. Fuentes begins, chewing nervously on her nicely polished nails. "It involves both Victor and his father."
"Okay, well, is it okay if everyone stays, or would you rather someone leave?" Lynn asks politely.
"Everyone can stay. Kellin already knows and it affects Vic big time," Mr. Fuentes butts in, looking around frantically. I kind of feel bad for him, but I also don't since he caused all this damage to the family.
"Tell me what's going on, then," The detective pushes, setting up a recorder in the middle of the table and positioning a notepad on her lap.
Mr. and Mrs. Fuentes tell Lynn the whole story, stopping in between sentences to catch their breath or wipe their eyes. Everyone in the room is highly emotional, whether it be Vic's angry banter or Mrs. Fuentes' pitiful sobbing. Eventually, though, the story is completed and everyone around the room sits in silence. Most of the guard's expressions are shocked, and Lynn just looks extremely annoyed.
"Wait, so you mean to tell me that you sabotaged your son's life so you could run free? You knew his name was Victor, and you knew the consequences would be great, so for you to consider yourself a parent is ridiculous. I'll make sure things work out for Victor, but I see some serious consequences in the way for you," Lynn rants, her eyes alight with rage.
Vic hangs his head, clearly affected by all of the things he's heard. I expected this, though. I expected him to be torn up. So, without hesitation, I wrap my arms around him tightly and kiss his cheek.
"It's going to be okay."
