Simon, who was currently on patrol, met Sha Qing who was on his way to the library.

He didn't expect this newcomer to make it through his first day at Rikers Island unscathed. He had heard a little about what happened on the hallway last night, and made a special trip to cell 1317 during midnight roll call to check him out, only to find the newbie sound asleep.

He hesitated for a moment when they met head-on, and his eyes unconsciously averted, but he couldn't resist calling out in the end, "Elvis."

"Yes, Sir?" Sha Qing asked politely as he stopped in his tracks .

He remembered Simon, a young White guy with an ordinary appearance. He was one of the rare guards here with a kinder attitude.

"About your cleaning task last night, I wasn't expecting for that kind of thing to happen....."

"That has nothing to do with you, Sir, and I'm fine. " Sha Qing said while smiling.

Simon stared gazed at the man's smile- it was gentle and pure, without any shadow, like the winter morning sun; it was untainted, without the slightest dirt. He couldn't take his eyes off from that countenance and his brain seemed to have to stop, filled with nothing but a comfortable, warm, blank space. It wasn't until the other party showed a questioning look of 'what's the problem?' that his thinking resumed.

"I know it's not easy for newcomers, especially when they run into Malvo and Wolf ...... I'll give you a little advice, uh, of course, just a small suggestion ...... forget it, I'm not good with words. " The more he talked, the more he stumbled. He finally decided to just leave..

"Wait, Sir." Sha Qing stopped him and blinked at him childishly. "I want to know that suggestion, please tell me."

""

At this moment, Simon wondered if he's suffering from arrhythmia.

While secretly scolding himself for his own lack of composure, for acting like brat who's still in puberty, he said hurriedly, "The best way for a newcomer like you to get a foothold here is to join a strong enough force, preferably 'The Godfather' instead of Wolf Stake or Malvo, which is why I put you in Cell 1317. He, at least, won't be salivating over your a-" he swallowed the word "ass" in his throat, "-over you."

"It turned out that it was because of your help I was able to stay in that single cell..." Sha Qing said in a sincere tone that could make anyone blush, "Thank you, sir."

Those words of gratitude made Simon impulsively want to say something, but the words shrank back to his throat before he could get them out.

Sha Qing nodded at him and withdrew politely.

Simon stood in place in a daze until Eric came up to him and said, "You can't do that, Simon."

"Do what?" he asked blankly.

"To prisoners. You can beat them up or take their money. You can even treat them as women when the need arises, but definitely not for real." The captain of the prison guards said seriously, "That would be against professional ethics."

"I'm not gay..." the young prison guard tried to explain, embarrassed.

"Half of the people here were originally straight." Eric, with a self-righteous look on his face, patted Simon on the shoulder and walked away.

Simon looked at his back and spat out the second half of the sentence, still stunned, "...I wasn't thinking of him as a woman either."
