The one-on-one interview was surprisingly simple. He was only asked with a few questions like: "Do you have any relatives or friends in the local area?" and "Is there anyone whom you can send personal items to during the closed training period?". Daniel answered none to those questions, and then he later signed a non-disclosure agreement. He was notified after signing that he was officially admitted, and that the training period would start immediately the next day
He was taken to a dormitory-like room with a wardrobe and six single beds, on which three were already occupied. The young Asian man, who occupied the bed near the window, was the exact Luo Yi he had a conversation with earlier. Because their previous talk didn't end on a good note, Daniel didn't greet Luo Yi, and the latter didn't seem eager to acknowledge him too. The young man just lied on the bed with his legs up while playing cards by himself.
Others came in one after another, filling up the beds. He didn't know how many out of the 24 people were admitted.
Now, his problem of being starved was solved, and he also had a clean albeit hard, bed enough for him to rest upon. Daniel felt satisfied for the time being, so as soon as his head touched the pillow, he immediately fell asleep
If it wasn't for the sudden loud noise in the middle of the night, then he would have probably slept till dawn.
--It was from a Hispanic guy sleeping on the opposite bed. The guy was howling with tears and he kept on banging his head on the metal bed. The rack on the side of the bed also banged loudly, waking everyone in the room. Two staff members immediately came a few minutes after the noise and helped him out.
" ...... That guy is probably a drug addict and he's going to be kicked out." -everyone thought as such silently. After the small commotion, all of them tried to fall back to sleep.
Unexpectedly, twenty minutes later, the Hispanic guy returned. He drifted towards his bed, happily mumbling about something with a perfectly satisfied face.
The Black guy on the bed next to his couldn't help but curiously asked, "Hey, man, did they give you something?"
The Hispanic guy grinned, still in a daze.
Two other people started chattering excitedly:
"They have such a good thing?"
"Fuck, I knew they added some 'ingredients'! Ordinary cigarettes aren't that good!"
"What are the conditions for us to receive 'it'? Or is the supply limited?"
The Hispanic man shook his head twice, and replied with a light and airy feeling, "Company benefits... limited to once a day... I have K-powder."
The rest of the group got even more excited, and their whispers were getting louder. The Black guy, Old Hei, immediately asked a staff member for it, and shortly after, five roll-your-own cigarettes were placed on the table.
Old Hei couldn't wait to try it, but upon closer inspection, he complained, "It's just marijuana, don't you have the 'high-end goods'?"
The staff smiled, and only left one sentence upon walking out of the room: "Company benefits are linked to performance: The better you do, the better the treatment."
Everyone was thrilled, and they got up to get a cigarette. Daniel also took one without a word.
Each of them took their own shares and found that there still one was left on the table. Old Hei pinched his fingers, scanned the room and asked, "Who didn't take it?" He looked at the Asian young man on the bed by the window: "You don't want it? Give it to me."
