Ghosts Can Make
Anyone Cry

Riya watched the tears begin leaking from Emily's eyes like a fully opened faucet, Mitch's own eyes beginning to fog up with tears. And just when Riya thought the sight couldn't have hit directly at her heart, even further.

Luke started singing his song by memory and heart.

"First things first
We start the scene in reverse
All of the lines rehearsed
Disappeared from my mind,"

Reading the song on the way over to the house never would have managed to prepare Riya for the emotional damage of hearing a broken Luke sing it with so much delicacy, as if each word he sang would ruin the song entirely.

"When things got loud
One of us running out
I should have turned around
But I had too much pride,"

Riya's own tears begun leaking from the corner of her eyes, leaving a warm path down her cheek towards her chin, which she didn't dare to wipe away to ruin the trance of Luke's singing in the back of her mind.

"No time for goodbyes
Didn't get to apologize
Pieces of a clock that lies broken,"

Emily pressed her hand against her mouth, sobbing into it, while more and more tears leaked out after every lyric. It was only then Riya realized, Luke could be heard when he sang, maybe not seen, but his voice could certainly reach everyone's ears.

His parents weren't just reading the song, they were hearing his son's voice sing it to him even from the afterlife, and they had no idea he was actually there in the room sharing their pain.

It made Riya want to cry even more.

"If I could take us back
If I could just do that
And write in every empty space
The words 'I love you' in replace
Then maybe time would not erase me."

Between Emily's sobs and Luke's almost imperceptible sorrowful voice cracks as he sang, Riya found it physically impossible to restrain the pooling tears in her eyes, it was a good thing she had chosen not to wear makeup to smudge that day.

"If you could only know
I never let you go
And the words I most regret
Are the ones I never meant to leave
Unsaid Emily,"

As soon as her name left Luke's lips, Emily broke down even further in Mitch's arms, clinging to the song next to her husband almost strong enough to break it in half yet careful not to actually hurt one of her son's last songs while he lived.

"Silent days
Mysteries and mistakes
Who'd be the first to break?
Guess we're alike that way,"

Mitch momentarily freed the song into Emily's careful hands to wipe at the tears at the bottom of his eyes, his wife nearly keeling over with her cries.

"He said, she said
Conversations in my head
And that's just where
They're gonna stay forever,"

The passion behind Luke's words couldn't be faked if anyone tried, the way each different lyric had a thousand different meanings applying to the hundred different situations him and his mother had lived through together. If Riya had ever questioned Luke's talent, those questions evaporated the instance he began the chorus once more.
