"Pardon?" Emma said with her head slightly tilted; surprise was clear in her face. He laughed while walking over to the table across from her, leaning his hands on it. "I mean, I'm going to take you to somewhere where you can practice driving. Don't you wanna learn how to drive?"
She raised a brow. She honestly wasn't scared of driving. When her parents first said she couldn't take driver's ed, she was mad. But over time, she got over that. Now she really didn't see the point in learning to drive. Maybe if it was 2005, she would care, but now we have Uber and Lyft, plus she could always just walk where she wanted to go. "I honestly don't see the point, Blake," she said honestly, shrugging.
The doorbell rang, letting them know the pancakes had been delivered "I know you love a challenge. Wouldn't it be nice to just challenge yourself to learn, just in case?" He walked over to the front door to get the food.
When he walked out of sight, she thought it over a bit more. She guessed she could just learn it for fun; just having a driver's license would be nice to have. He walked back into the kitchen, setting the confetti pancakes from IHOP in front of her along with a fork. He set the takeout plate down on the table.
"I mean, if I can race cars, I'm sure I can teach you how to drive," he said with a cocky smirk.
She put some pancake into her mouth. "You're right... why not? Let's do it!" Excitement filled her chest as he sat in the spot across from her. He picked up his own fork and began eating.
"Wouldn't it be nice if you tried for your license and got them before school starts back?" she smiled while nodding. It would be cool to pull up to school in a car on the first day. Emma did have a job now; she could probably keep working through the school year if she played her cards right and didn't get caught.****
That's how they ended up in Blake's car at a closed-down Walmart parking lot.
She was sitting behind the wheel, hands clasping around the smooth leather. She had already adjusted her seat and the mirrors; now the only thing she needed to do was put the keys in and start driving. She let out a breath, looking out through the windshield.
"Start out slowly, and remember I'm right here beside you," Blake said, rubbing her shoulder. His hand fell from her shoulder, and her foot pressed down slightly too hard on the gas pedal. The car jerked forward, making them both gasp. "Sorry," she whispered, looking at him out of the side of her eye.
He rubbed her thigh, sending shivers through her body. "You got this. Just breathe and take it slow." She nodded and pushed her foot softly on the pedal. She pushed aside the embarrassment she felt as the car moved forward slowly.
With Blake by her side, the next few hours she drove around the abandoned area, getting more and more comfortable as time went on. When she would do something wrong or get frustrated with herself, Blake would gently tell her the right way, which she appreciated. They continued practicing until it was about time for Blake to pick up Alex.
"Honestly, Emma, you did a good job for your first time," he said as they switched seats, him getting behind the wheel.
She smiled. While she was driving, she did mess up a few times, but hearing that she didn't do as bad as she thought made her feel slightly better. "We'll practice a few more times together, and at the end of the summer, try for your license. What do you think?" He sent her a smile before starting the car.
She relaxed back into the seat. "I think that's a great idea." She smiled, looking out the window as they headed towards Alex's friend's house.
