Chapter 13

I strode towards to Spanish where Chloe should be leaving any second. The bell rang and she walked out of class and smiled when she saw me waiting.

“Where were you?”

“Um, my alarm didn’t go off!”

“Hate that!” I hated lying to Chloe but I just couldn’t tell her about what really happened this morning. I nodded and we walked towards History class.

“Kat!” I turned around and was face to face with the Varsity cheerleading captain: Emily Charms.

“Em!” I ran up and hugged her. When I was little Emily used to play with me and Blake because she lived a few doors down from us, aw I remember those days.

“I didn’t know you were in high school!” Emily has mid back strawberry blonde hair, bright green eyes, she’s 5’8” has really long legs, and is really beautiful. Like I said, she’s the captain of the Varsity Cheer, she’s a junior. In fact, she’s Carter’s girlfriend. “How’s baseball going?”

“I’ve only had a few practices but its fine. How’s cheerleader?”

“We’re going to cheer tonight at the game! Oh My God! Kat, you should try out for the Junior Varsity team! I’m holding try outs during lunch today. Please come!”

“Oh, we’ll be there!” Chloe was glowing. She always wanted me to join cheerleading.

“Awesome! See you there!” she ran off and I turned to Chloe.

“You’re gonna regret that.”

“Whatever. OMG I can’t believe you’re trying out!”

“Go home.” I grunted and strode off to class.

**Fast-forward to Lunch**

Chloe and I walked to the gym and stood next to the rest of the freshman and sophomores trying out. Alright, you’re probably thinking: “Kat’s a baseball player, a tomboy, doesn’t she hate cheerleaders?”

Wrong.

Most of my friends are cheerleaders, actually. They’re great to hang out for some girl time and I could use as much of that as possible.

“Alright ladies! Line up and we’ll begin!” Emily stood in front of us with her best friend, Carly, and a few other seniors. Emily looked across the line and saw me. Her smile increased and she sent me a wink which I returned with an eye roll. “First up!”

A chubby girl strode up and placed her hands on her hips. Wow this girl got sass. She started doing a cheer routine our school in the past and I thought she did great but Carly shook her head at Emily and Emily agreed.

“Next!”

The girls kept going, giving their performances and then walking off, the line decreasing. It was finally Chloe’s turn. She strode up to the center and got ready. She clicked on her phone and a pop song that I couldn’t put my finger on blasted from her phone and she danced a routine which consisted of her back hand springs and cartwheels and such. She finished and it was my turn.

What was I going to do?

“What are you going to do for us today?” Emily smiled.

“Um, I guess gymnastics.” I’m actually really good at gymnastics, self taught really.

I started with a back walkover then a back flip, with a cartwheel, a backhand spring, another back walk over, I went into a handspring and walked on my hands then did once again another back walk over. I finished with a spot on aerial. I turned towards my ‘judges’ and smiled with a curtsy. Their chins were down to the floor. Emily and Carly stood up and started clapping and the other seniors joined.

“I’d hate to be the person after her, but next!” Emily smiled at me then screamed “next” louder because the girl didn’t come up. I took a seat next to Chloe and she gave me a high five and smiled.

“That was awesome! I didn’t know you could do that!”

“Comes naturally, I guess.”

“Oh em gee, my bestest friend is going to be cheer captain!”

“Let’s not get ahead of ourselves now- Is that Ashley?”

“Ashley, as in Natalie’s sidekick?”

“Affirmative.”

“Scoping out the scene. I believe that, so called subject is Ashley.”

“I didn’t even know she was a cheerleader.” I scoffed.

“Yeah, neither were you till like 2 minutes ago…”

“Oh shu’up.” Ashley actually wasn’t that bad, hate to admit it but she wasn’t. After all the try outs were finished we were all seated in the bleachers and the seniors came in front of us.

“Stats will be posted at the end of the day, outside the gym. We’re not responsible for injuries, self esteem problems, bullying, sabotages, or any other problems. So don’t come crying to us. Enjoy the rest of your day! See you soon!” Emily gave me a smile and I returned it. I left the gym with Chloe and he blabbering about some boy she likes now.

I kept a smile on my face and that’s when I realized:

I have baseball today!
